A monkey could have won with this team…

ADELPHIA, NJContenders and Pretenders alike all believe their teams are still “in it” this time of year. Around Major League Baseball many of these teams have been scrambling for trade deadline talent to help with postseason pushes. In spite of this off-field activity, not much is going on in pro sports right now that gets me jacked up.  Because I am without Jack, and also without Jack, I will be rambling about a few topics that have been “grinding” at me over the last few weeks during my time on the DL. West Coast Craig‘s Hall Of Fame one-act play was better than the actual induction ceremony in Cooperstown, so I will pick on two of this year’s honorees.

“OK Joe” Torre – let’s face it, Joe is revered in New York for good reason but also across Baseball too as the epitome of a stand up guy. I think nearly anyone, even Small Matt-could have won four championships with the talent given to him by Gene Michael, Brian Cashman, and George Steinbrenner’s checkbook. So I agree with Joe’s comment that he would not be a HOFer without the Yanks. This Hobbyist writer believes that Torre purposely omitted kudos to George and his family during his awkward speech yesterday. This was Joe’s payback for the way the Steinbrenner family offered him a pay cut to return as manager back in 2008.

Tony La Russa- First let me say that LaRussa deserves his induction and was a winner as a Manager. His self deprecating speech showed a real humility that I found surprising from a guy with a self-loving reputation. The  problem was that he was winging it completely! As he spoke, Tony scanned the crowd and sounded like a guy that was put on the spot, which we ALL know is not true. HUH? Well, he is a lawyer, after all.

Why is Witten the best man , Tony?

Why is Witten the best man , Tony?

Now for some NFL Pre-Season NONSENSE…….

Nobody BLOVIATES  better than the Jets and they did not disappoint in the first week of training camp.

Dee Milner started it off with “I’m the best corner in the NFL”  WOW!

Tony “Big Game” Romo was asked about his relationship with Dez Bryant . Always the diplomat (BS-er extraordinaire) Tony said if he were to get married today, Dez would be in his wedding….

Can’t wait for the first game (possession?) that Dez is NOT getting any attention.

ESPN- While I appreciate the ability to watch sports news at anytime during a 24 hour day, I really can’t stomach those commercials and promos that they air constantly!  Self-serving much?

I find myself watching more and more of the NFL Network and MLB Network just because of those hideous ESPN promos.

I personally cannot stomach Mike Greenberg!!  I’ve never liked the unathletic wimpy geek, trying to draw attention to himself  in a sports forum….

Who are your LEAST  favorite TV sports personalities? Bring me your ANGST! Cause I can’t stand “Greenie!”

Tune in for Angry Ward Wednesday tomorrow..

About the Author ()

Walter "The Grinding Ax" Hynes comes from the same Sports Royalty bloodlines as Short Matt... He's heaving hatchets off the heads of any deserving Sports Personalities... So watch out. His favorite teams are the NY Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Dallas Cowboys, NY Jets and Manchester United. A suburban husband and father of two, Walter understands what it takes to be a second guessing, sideline heckling parent and coach.

Greeny is better then most. He is ten times better then Michael Kay.

    • GrindingAxWalter

      Please elaborate…

    • http://meetthematts.com/ Meet The Matts

Agreed. Mike K is worse than Mike F. There. We said it.

  • mo mohel

Greenberg is a jock sniffing putz.

    • GrindingAxWalter

You know something that we don’t?

  • Different Matt

    Greenberg and golic are unlistenable.

        Great documentary.

    • GrindingAxWalter

Thank you. My wife likes it for reasons I do not know…

    • http://meetthematts.com/ Meet The Matts

Fancesa and Kay are unlistenable (Is that a word?). Mike and Mike are okay.

      • GrindingAxWalter

I have to disagree . I will listen to Michael Kay over Mike and Mike and especially Franfatsa Repeater anytime. I am glad my commute is only about 25 minutes, however.

I live in New York and have about as much reverence for Joe Torre as I do someone who clips their nails on the subway and then takes a dump between cars. He should be inducted into the Hall of Phonies.

    • GrindingAxWalter

I remember being on a pay phone in the early nineties at EWR, talking to my wife and hearing a guy bitching on the next phone. I look to my left and it was Joe Torre with a bandage on his bulbous nose. I wish there were camera phones back then. Had the Yankees kept Showalter they may have won 6 or 7.

      • http://meetthematts.com/ Meet The Matts

        Showalter was too tightly wound.

    • FakeSandyAlderson

I will never forgive Torre for his phony disingenuous idiotic defense of Clemens firing the broken bat shards at Piazza in the 2000 WS. Clemens was/is a thug and Torre was Luca Brazzi.

      • AngryWard

Torre was a phony disingenuous idiot way back when he was managing the some of the worst Mets teams ever. I’ve mentioned this before but I will never forget him running through a modest gauntlet of fans en route to his car after a game. He mimed grabbing at pads and pens and baseballs but signed nothing and took off. We may have been losers for standing there, but he was a 10x bigger loser for not giving a crap for fans who supported that team through thick and thin.

        • http://meetthematts.com/ Meet The Matts

Agreed. Torre was in the booth because he failed in his previous managerial stops.

  • AngryWard

Oh, and I don’t like local sports schmoe Russ Salzberg, wherever he is now. Also, pretty much anyone on ESPN or any NFL pregame show.

    • GrindingAxWalter

I think schmoe is a perfect moniker for Russ Salzberg

    • http://meetthematts.com/ Meet The Matts

Budd Mishkin on NY 1 is the best for NY sports.

      • FakeSandyAlderson

Steve Cangialosi, the jockey of sports anchors

      • Dude

I object to anyone who would spell bud with two D’s. Joe buck, Jon miller, and timmmccarver are all unlistenable bores. Mike ditka is horrible, I can’t listen to him mispronounce Washington like it has an “r” in it.

    • FakeSandyAlderson

Russ is lined up for a future MeettheMatts radio segment. Stay tuned…

  • Junoir Blaber

So when we are in the writers hall of fame we exclude the Matts in our speech?

    • GrindingAxWalter

Hmmmm. If you give them the speech, they will surely edit the Matts into it.
