PORT JEFF, NY – Greetings. There’s just one week left to decide the 2025 MLB season. Let’s talk about it! Topics are: Mets Cling to Final WC Spot, Guardians on Verge of History.
Mets Cling to Final WC Spot
The Mets lost 5-3 to the Nationals on Saturday. Despite winning 4 of their last five games, the Mets lead in the WC standings dwindled to just one game, with the Reds beating the Cubs.
This is it.
This is the kind of nightmare scenario Mets fans dreaded. With a week left in the regular season the Mets are barely clinging to the final Wild Card spot over not only the Reds – but the Diamondbacks as well – at just two games back. The Mets end the regular season with three games against the Cubs, who may have nothing to play for, having secured their spot as a WC team. They also play the Marlins, who have been one of the best teams in baseball since the All-Star break. Oddly enough, I don’t think it really matters who this team plays right now. They’re capable of beating anytime and losing to any team they rarely play to the level of their competition.
This is truly one of the most frustrating Mets teams in recent memory. They have all the upside in the world but can never seem to get all facets of the game clicking at the same time. I’ll end our discussion on the not-so-Amazin Mets on a positive note and talk about Juan Soto. After a tough April, Soto has been maybe the best player in baseball outside of Judge and Ohtani. Soto has been everything we hoped for when the Mets signed him, he’s set a new career high with 42 HRs, leads baseball in walks and his OPS is over 930. But what’s been most surprising about Soto’s game is he’s blown past his previous career high of 12 in the stolen base department with a whopping 35 this season. With just over a week to play Soto, is chasing history as he looks to join the short list of players in major league history to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases. However this season ends, I’m very excited to watch Juan Soto play baseball in flushing for the next decade plus.
Guardians on Verge of History

What the Cleveland Guardians are doing in the AL central is one of the most incredible things I think I’ve ever seen in baseball. In the middle of June they trailed the first place Tigers by 15.5 games in the division. At the trade deadline they didn’t do much. However, they did trade away their former CY Young winning ace Shane Bieber. They were also at the forefront of a betting scandal involving their star closer Emmanuel Clase, who is unlikely to ever throw another pitch in the MLB. Despite all of that the Guardians have gone on one of the most remarkable runs the game has ever seen. Winners of now ten straight and 14 of 15, have cut the Tigers double digit lead earlier this month to just one game with a massive three game series in Cleveland to likely decide the division. If they pull this off, Manager Stephen Vogt has to be the favorite for manager of the year given the sheer lack of talent this team has and somehow keeping them above water with what’s in all honestly a very average roster. This is why baseball is such an incredible sport and why it’s postseason is perhaps the most compelling of any sport. You simply have to just find your way into the playoffs and get hot at the right time, after that you never know.
