ORLANDO, FL – Last week’s winter meetings in Orlando, Florida produced the following quote from N.Y. Yankees ANAL-ytic leader Brian Cashman, “Certainly was rooting for him. One of the games’ great players of his time on both sides of the ball. Obviously the back injury derailed him. And one of the great human beings. He obviously was a great baseball player but he’s a great person too.”
That great person he was referring to was Don Mattingly, after the Veterans Committee decided he wasn’t GREAT enough for the Hall of Fame. If Cashman thinks that “Donnie Baseball” is so GREAT then why isn’t he wearing pinstripes? Why was Mattingly coaching the Toronto Blue Jays, who knocked out Cashman’s team in the playoffs? Why has The Hit Man been on three different teams since he parted with the Yankees?
Is Cashman talking out of his ass, as he usually does when he talks about former Yankee employees?
Mattingly is currently a free agent, and just the thought of this GREAT human being not to be pursued by the team that retired his number is moronic.

Maybe his clean shaven face doesn’t fit the Yankees look being its new facial policy of looking grimey. Or maybe his career hit total of 2,153 overqualifies him to come back to his old role of hitting coach. After all, the three hitting coaches the Yanks employ now have a total of zero hits on the Major League level.
For us New Yorkers, Mattingly, along with another Captain, Thurman Munson are Hall of Famers in our hearts. We also know that Mattingly should be managing this Yankees franchise, but according to this Evil Empire, what do we know?
