Mets Massive Mistake

PORT JEFF, NY- Greetings and Happy Sunday! Let’s talk sports. How about… the Mets Massive Mistake.

Alonso’s return to NY

Pete Alonso’s return to New York was a reminder of everything the Mets had, everything they built around him, and everything they ultimately allowed to slip away.

For years, Pete Alonso was one of the defining faces of the Mets. He arrived as a rookie and immediately became one of the most dangerous power hitters in baseball, breaking the National League rookie home run record and quickly establishing himself as a centerpiece of the franchise. More than the numbers, though, Alonso became synonymous with the Mets. He embraced New York, embraced the pressure, and consistently made it clear how much playing for the Mets meant to him.

That is what made his departure so difficult to accept.

When Alonso returned to New York, the reaction from Mets fans showed just how much he still means to the organization and its supporters. The cheers, the attention, and the emotion surrounding his return served as a reminder that this was not simply another former player coming back to town. This was a player who had become part of the identity of the franchise.

The most frustrating part is that it did not have to end this way.

Ownership had an opportunity to keep Alonso in Queens and preserve one of the most recognizable connections between him and the Mets fan base. Instead, negotiations dragged on, and the  Mets ultimately allowed him to leave. Whether the organization believed the contract demands were too high or simply decided to take the roster in another direction, the result was the same: a player who should have spent the prime of his career wearing a Mets uniform was gone.

To add insult to injury, Alonso is in the midst of having a monster offensive season. I think this will go down as one of the biggest mistakes this franchise has ever made.
