Sports Rain Man: Mets Week in Review And NY Football State of Mind

NIAGARA FALLS, NY: Happy Monday, Not much to add and no personal stories today, so let’s just get into the topics. We’re going to talk about the Mets weekend review and talk football with the three New York State teams.

NY Mets Week in Review

I’m getting on the fire David Stearns bus. I watched the Mets get swept by the Orioles, with long-time Met and fan favorite Pete Alonso getting the game-winning hit for the Orioles—wait, for the Mets? No, for the Orioles. And I can’t help but ask: why did we let this guy go again? Stearns’ idea to break up Lindor and Alonso still doesn’t make sense, considering how poor the Mets have been this year and last year, when they just missed the playoffs.

The Mets followed up that stinker of a series by splitting with the Phillies 2-2. But what hurt the most is yesterday was Howie Rose Day, as it was his last game in the booth. But it was pouring rain and the Mets got an ugly loss. —At least before first pitch they decided they would honor him next season on a sunny opening day.

The J-E-T-S took an ugly overtime loss to Green Bay. The Jets were up 10 in the fourth quarter but somehow blew it. This didn’t feel like the same old Jets because they were pretty bad last season, but they’ve already got one win and they almost had another. The experience felt like a team that was used to losing, not quite knowing how to win. And there’s hope that they’ll start learning how to win these close games.

It’s a process in which they kind of fumble through to figure out what to do and how to hold their nerve when the pressure is at its highest. It was a disappointing loss, but overall there were some really good moments and bright spots. Just, you know, going for field goals when they could have had touchdowns, getting unnecessary roughness penalties in overtime, and just bad plays and pass interference when you needed calm and composure. Hopefully they’ll get it right too.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills played on Thursday night in their first home game in that boondoggle of a stadium called Highmark Stadium. God, they ripped off the city, county, state, and fans. But anyway, they came out strong and looked strong all the way. Detroit tried to rally, but it was just too much energy from the Bills, considering their fan support and everything. I will say it carried them to a victory. I mean, everybody played well on offense and defense, and we’ll see how it carries them through the season, but so far it’s a good start.

New York Giants

I don’t understand how the Giants, who only won four or five games last year, start the season with a Sunday night game and now they get a Monday night game. Like, they get two nationally televised games to start the season. That’s just weird. I guess that must be the John Harbaugh effect. They’ll face the Rams tomorrow, and I have to go with the Rams. The Rams didn’t look good in Australia, but that’s down to jet lag and travel and weirdness. I think the Rams are just fine. Let’s see how it plays out.

Come back tomorrow for The Big Aristotle.
