UPSTATE, NY – We are seven days from the College Football Playoff National Championship and if last Thursday was any sign, we’re all in for quite the treat.
Next Monday’s national championship feature’s two of my four College Football Playoff final four teams – Oregon and Ohio State – and my national champion, Oregon, in what is sure to be a high-scoring affair. While many at the beginning of the season felt that Alabama and Florida State would be the two teams duking it out for the first College Football Playoff National Championship, that’s not how the cookies crumbled on New Year’s Day.
After watching the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl it was clear that these two teams deserved a shot to fight for the crown.
With a week left until kickoff, here are Five Reasons To Be Excited About The College Football National Championship Game:
No More Jamies Winston: Florida State quarterback Jamies Winston certainly had a hard time gaining fans this season with everything that happened off of the field, and that was never more clear than when he fumbled late in the fourth quarter New Year’s Day. For just one week this season, college football fans can forget about Florida State and their previously-perfect record.
Oregon’s Uniforms: Whether you’re a fan of them or not, you have to admit that Oregon’s jerseys are rather flashy. Monday provides college football fans one more opportunity to see the Ducks’ bright uniforms in action.
Another Look At Cardale Jones: Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones has had quite the ride this season, going from third-string quarterback to starting the national championship game is almost unheard of. Considering Jones will most likely go back to being a back-up for the Buckeyes next season, there’s a good chance he could enter the NFL draft in a couple of weeks.
A National Championship Not Featuring The SEC: The entire college football world pretty much hates the SEC, right? Alright… Maybe “hate” is a strong word. Strongly dislikes might be the better choice? Either way, enjoy the first national championship game that doesn’t feature a team from the SEC since the 2005-06 season when the BCS Championship game featured Texas and USC.
A Chance To Watch A Future No. 1 Overall Draft Pick: Chances are good Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota will be the No. 1 overall draft pick this May, so Monday will be everyone’s last chance to watch the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner in action before he turns pro. You’ll want to be sure you’re watching Mariota orchestrate that Oregon spread offense one last time.
Prediction: Oregon Ducks win 46-24.
And finally, rest in peace Stuart Scott. ESPN will never be the same. #Boo-Yow
