EL BARRIO, EL FALLS – Just another Manic Monday, people. I don’t wish it was Friday either cause I don’t want to deprive you of your weekly reading of the ramblings of my mind. With that said here is what is on my mind: More Astros Hate, Spring Training, David Ayers, Ovi700.
More Astros Hate: I thought I was done with this last week but the start of Spring Training has fired it up again. I mean, the Astros fired the coach and GM… and now no little league team will be allowed to call themselves the Astros? What’s left?! Well friends, it seems Mark Cuban, the owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, has called the Comissioner of Baseball, “gutless” for his reaction to the cheating. You have David “Big Papi” Ortiz calling the whistle-blower a snitch and the whistle-blower, now with JG Clancy’s A’s, claiming he is getting death threats, while also saying Oakland stadium is too crappy to pull of a complex cheating operation like in Houston. Finally, you have the Yankees belly-aching about how they supposedly got defeated by those cheats and not cause they didn’t play well enough.
Spring Training starts: Finally! Spring Training has started and I can’t tell you how happy I am its here. Now, I know the Mets are a long show but they still provide a better chance of winning the title than my Jets, Knicks or Rangers. Also this early in Spring Training, you are kind of watching to see if any body from Triple or Double A will be able to make the jump up and see who will be there in a year or two.
David Ayers: You may have not heard of this man. He is a Zamboni driver for the Toronto Marlies BUT… he just helped the Carolina Hurricanes win a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. One of the quirks of hockey is that the home team has to have a back-up goalie available for the visiting team, in case of emergency. So, the Hurricane’s were winning against the Leafs in Toronto and had their first goalie go down in the first period. As a consequence, Ayers was sent from the stands in the Hurricanes dressing room. By the time, he was done with a feel good story interview about his role, Carolina lost their second goalie. Guess what happened next. Ayers was up, still with his Maple Leafs t-shirt on, as he put on the Carolina jersey. Ayers was beat on the first two shots he faced but then got his bearings and managed to save the next set of shots he faced to help the ‘Canes win 6-3. Ayers has been offered honorary citizenship for the state of North Carolina and the Hurricanes are now selling his jersey on their website. Proceeds go to a kidney transplant foundation of Ayers choice. Oh yeak, odd tidbit is Ayers received a kidney transplant 15 years ago also. Is this the best human interest story in sports this young year?!
Ovi700: The latest member of the 700 club in the NHL is Alexei Overchekin Alex Ovechkin. He has always been a natural goal scorer but has added an all around game and more importantly a team player over the past few seasons. The new question is will he be able to catch Gretzky at 854. That is tough to say but I really believe if anyone can do it is Ovi. Lets see how the next 3 season go for him.
