PORT JEFF, NY – Wow! It’s been quite the week for New York sports fans! Let’s dive in with: Knicks Big Week, Scuffling Yankees, Resurgent Mets!
Knicks Big Week
The New York Knicks made a blockbuster move on Tuesday night, acquiring Mikal Bridges from the Nets in exchange for some draft capital. Later that night, the Knicks agreed to bring back OG Anunoby to a 5-year/200-million-plus contract. They addressed some depth concerns with some draft picks, most notably Tyler Kolek of Marquette. As a Johnnie’s fan, I’ve seen a lot of the George Mason transfer. He is as good of passer as I have ever seen and will be a fantastic backup to Jalen Brunson. With all these moves coming together I can confidently say this is the first time in my lifetime the Knicks have a legit chance to win a championship.
Scuffling Yankees
All of sudden the Yanks look mortal. Luis Gil has come back down to earth after a scorching start. Gerrit Cole has looked shaky since returning from injury. The bullpen has been leaking oil for weeks. Normally a team with a 52-30 record could afford to play sub .500 ball for a few weeks, but with the O’s breathing down their necks the Yankees need to figure this out, quickly. With the impending free agency of Juan Soto, this may be a limited window for the Yankees to compete with Baltimore.
Resurgent Mets!
Since a team meeting was held in late May, the Mets have been a different team. With contributions from all over the lineup, the Mets are currently a 1-game back of a playoff spot. Kodai Senga is making progress and could join the club after the All-Star break. With a rotation of Senga, Luis Severino and Christian Scott, this Mets team has a legit chance to play into the postseason, not to mention the possibility of buying at the trading deadline. With the resources that Steve Cohen has, who knows how much better the Mets can be.
That’s it for me, come back tomorrow for Aristotle “Mugsy” Sakelaridis.
