SPANISH HARLEM – The New York Yankees are ultimately in the same discussion with every other team that wants Juan Soto. Nothing has materialized about any money being offered, as every team interested in Soto is in the flirting stage at this point. That will soon change but I’m here to discuss the good and bad of the Soto chase.
THE BAD
We know that Soto is at the top of list for the Yankees, and they will do their very best to make sure he remains a Yankee. The threats to me remain the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers, as they have the capital to make these types of moves. The Yankees are no longer the open bank of major league baseball that they were when George Steinbrenner was around, with all Yanks fans clamoring for the days of yesteryears.
This very much means that the Yankees won’t be the highest bidder, IMO. They will have to rely on their best competitive offer and the hope that he loved wearing the pinstripes. I imagine that Steve Cohen will put his best foot forward and won’t be outspent so that puts the Yankees in an undesirable position of hoping for the best. If he doesn’t that will start a whirlwind amount of activity to make this team a contender next season.
THE GOOD
There is only good if he re-ups with the Yankees, as that will allow them to have the best one-two punch in all of baseball for possibly the next 8 years with Aaron Judge in the lineup every day. This will also allow the front office to go out to mix and match the best-case scenario under that budget that remains. They made the World Series, but they certainly have holes that were exploited, and they will start there to get back to the chip.
That’s it for now, please come back tomorrow for Action Jackson Sternberg
