Rookies Impress Giants, Mets Season On The Brink

PORT JEFF, NY – We’re in the dog days of summer, and there’s plenty to bark about. Today’s topics may having you panting for different reasons: , Rookies Impress Giants, Mets Season On The Brink

Rookies Impress Giants

In some positive news for NY sports, rookie QB Jaxson Dart made his preseason debut against the Bills and looked every bit like a promising young quarterback. Even though it was just a preseason game, Giants fans like me have been craving consistent QB play. With Brian Daboll at the helm, it’s exciting to imagine how Dart might develop in another year or so. Abdul Carter, the 3rd overall pick in the draft, was also everywhere on the field and looked like a superstar. Along with Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence, the G-Men have some exciting rookies to keep an eye on this season.

This may sound a bit dramatic, but even as one of the most optimistic Mets fans, I have serious doubts after they blew a 6-0 lead on Wednesday to a depleted Braves team, in the middle of a pennant race. It’s about as bad a loss as you can have without the season actually ending. David Peterson, who had been so reliable all season and emerged as the Mets’ ace, failed to complete five innings. Reed Garrett, who had been solid all year, gave up a Grand Slam to Michael Harris that turned out to be the back-breaker. It’s still August, and the Mets may very well make the postseason, but losing a game like that, against that team—when it seemed like the tide was finally turning—feels almost impossible to recover from. To make matters worse, they dropped a second straight game where they had a lead and lost the series to the struggling Braves. The Mets will get a much-needed boost on Saturday when rookie Nolan McLean makes his MLB debut against the Mariners.
