Mets epic collapse and Giants/Cowboys preview and prediction

Port Jeff NY- It’s been a brutal week for New York Sports, let’s talk about it.

Mets melt continues and Giants week two preview.

The Mets lost their 8th straight game Saturday in as heartbreaking fashion as possible. Brandon Sprout was excellent, firing six scoreless innings before handing a 2-0 lead to the bullpen. I don’t know what to say at this point. Last night, it was Rogers and Diaz who melted for the Mets blowing yet another game that they held a lead going into the 8th inning. I think we’ve reached the point where it’s a large enough sample size that I can say this is flat out a bad team. Since they began the year 45-24 they’ve been the 4th worst team in baseball at 31-48. That’s not a fluke, it’s not an unlucky stretch. It’s simply bad baseball from a bad team. The blame for this disastrous collapse falls solely on the players. David Sterns has put a good team together and Carlos Mendoza has managed this team to the best of his abilities. They added several key pieces at the deadline, and those moves just haven’t worked the way we thought they would. Just three weeks ago the Mets swept the Phillies to pull within 4 games of first place. Now as of today September 14th, the division race is over and the Mets now hold just a 0.5 game lead over the Giants for the final WC spot with the Reds and Diamondbacks not far behind. At this point I don’t see how they hang onto a playoff spot, they’ve shown no ability to put together complete games in a time of year when it’s needed to win such crucial games. I’m not sure how to rank this collapse among the horrific ones this team has put its fans through over the years. In 2007 they infamously blew a seven game lead with 17 to play to lose the division, in 2008 they were blown out by the Marlins on the final day of the year to miss out on the playoffs by a game and in 2022 they blew a ten game lead to the Braves and subsequently lost in the WC round to the Padres. I wouldn’t quite put this collapse up there just yet, but don’t worry. There’s plenty of time for the 2025 Mets to join the list of all time collapses for this franchise with just over two weeks to play.

Giants head to Dallas

The Giants looked about as I expected in week one against the Commanders. The defense was good enough to keep them in the game for a large portion of it, however the offense without Andrew Thomas put out a truly pathetic performance. Russell Wilson didn’t look good at all, though I’m not sure how much blame we can place on Russ given how poor the O-line played. After yet another 0-1 start, the Giants head to Dallas today to play a Cowboys team that looked surprisingly good considering they just traded their franchise player in Micah Parsons. The Cowboys are about as mediocre a team as there is in the NFL. Having said that, Andrew Thomas has been ruled out for this game, and without him the Giants offense has almost no chance of consistently moving the ball on offense enough to give them a real chance to win.
