Tonight is one of my favorite events in all of sports, the MLB Home Run Derby. This season’s derby brings a New York v. New York challenge with David Wright leading the NL squad and Robinson Cano the AL squad.
Wright, who is playing the host of the event along with his Mets chose an unique team. Wright selected childhood friend and Colorado Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer, Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez (who was replaced with Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Pedro Alverez,) and Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper. Wright’s team is interesting to say the least.
Cano, the 2011 Derby winner selected a more predictable team of sluggers. Cano chose last year’s Derby winner Detroit Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder, current home run leader Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, and Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Expect to see the American League dominate in this year’s competition.
Here’s how I see this derby playing off. By the way… I think it’s going to be an AL sweep.
Chris Davis: Look, I’m going to put it out there… Chris Davis could be on steroids. Davis’ career high in home runs for a season prior to this year is 33 and, well, he already has 36. I’m sorry but that makes someone scratch their head, including myself. That aside Davis can hit the long ball and can certainly hang with this bunch. The question is… is this too big of a scene of Davis? Projected Finish: 4th
Robinson Cano: Robbie Cano Dontcha Know!? As much as I would love Robbie to win his second home run derby, I just don’t think it’s possible this year with this field. But never count out Cano because his pure swing will keep him in this thing. And I can guarantee… Robinson Cano will at least hit one home run in this year’s contest; unlike last season. Projected Finish: 3rd
Yoenis Cespedes: Cespedes can straight rake! I’m sure you’ve probably seen Cesepdes audition tape for Major League ball clubs prior to signing with the A’s a couple years ago in which the Cuban Sensation displayed his ability to hit the ball all over the field. Cespedes is built for this competition and expect him to factor in for the crown. Projected Finish: 2nd
Prince Fielder: Folks… I smell a repeat coming! No Fielder does not have the most home runs this season in this field, but his stroke is made for BP and the Home Run Derby. Cano’s choice of Fielder was a wise one and will give the Prince and opportunity to repeat. Projected Finish: 1st
