PORT JEFF, NY- Greetings, Let’s talk some ball! Giants Season Outlook, Jets Show Life, Mets Free Agency
Giants Season Outlook
The Giants enter Sunday at 2-6 after yet another loss in a game they had every opportunity to win against the Steelers. Despite it being incredibly frustrating to watch, the result of this game was irrelevant. At 2-6 the Giants are headed for yet another lost season. What makes this season particularly frustrating is the roster isn’t a total disaster. There are many pieces that lead me to believe this team could be competitive with a competent QB. Entering week 9, the Giants led by all-pros Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence, lead the NFL in sacks. On the offensive side of the ball, things have taken a massive turn for the worst since star Left Tackle Andrew Thomas was lost for the season. However there is plenty to be excited about going forward. Malik Nabers in his rookie season looks like a superstar and 5th round pick Tyrone Tracy looks like the RB of the future. Daniel Jones has had some decent games this years, however it’s clear he’s not the long term solution at QB for this team. I’m not sure where the Giants look for their future QB as this upcoming draft class isn’t particularly a strong one at the position. Regardless of who the QB is, I think Brian Daboll has proven himself to be an excellent Head Coach and is deserving of a chance to find his guy.
Jets Show Life
The Jets ended their five game losing streak on Thursday with a win against the Texans. After a disastrous stretch the Jets finally looked like the team we all thought they’d be coming into the season. Since the NFL added a 7th seed to make the playoffs, no team is truly ever out of it. The Jets will enter a stretch of very winnable games over the next month against the Cardinals, Colts, Seahawks, Dolphins and Jaguars. Realistically, they need to go at minimum 4-1 in that stretch to give themselves a shot at the postseason. I’ve actually thought Aaron Rodgers has played pretty well given some of the issues this team has on the O-line. If this offense can build on this performance, I see no reason why the Jets can’t get hot heading into the month of December.
Mets Free Agency
After an incredible season, owner Steve Cohen will almost certainly spend anything to put this team over the top. The obvious top priority will be Juan Soto. Soto is expected to command one of the biggest contracts in the history of baseball, and rightfully so. Soto is the best hitter in baseball and is just 26 years old. I expect the Mets to go hard in their pursuit of Soto. Though they won’t be alone in their pursuit, I think the Amazins are positioned as well as any other team to lure him to Queens.
Other then Soto, the team has several other questions that need to be addressed:
–Pete Alonso is a free agent, though I expect the Mets and Alonso to come to agreement on a short term deal where Alonso will look to improve on a relatively disappointing 2024 regular season and hit the open market again in the near future.
-Sean Manaea is coming off a career year will enter free agency. This is a very tough one, I would love for the Mets to bring Manaea back, however if a team is going to give Manaea north of 80 million dollars I’m not sure the Mets can meet that number.
-They do need another top of the line starter, so I do expect them to be in on former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes.
I think Steve Cohen is ready to go all in this offseason after the Mets came withing two wins of the World Series.
