NEW YORK, NY – The month of November was flooded with Major League Baseball’s Award Winners. The Rookie of the Year, The Manager of the Year, The Cy Young Award, and the Most Valuable Player were all announced.
In a game that prides itself on individual achievements I feel that there is something missing. Where is the award for Coach of the Year? These are the individuals that grind it out on a daily basis.They hit the fungoes, pitch batting practice, relay signs, and position the players among other things.
They also wave runners home and act like a deposit box for a base runners equipment. Let’s not forget lending an ear to the players’ gripes.
In a season where mediocrity ruled, the Houston Astros had three batters finish in the top ten for batting average. Number six was Yordan Alvarez at .308, number eight Yanier Diaz at .299, and Jose Altuve .295. The teams hitting coaches, Alex Cintron and Troy Snitker, should be commended for their batters achievements.
Over on the pitching side those same Astros had two pitchers finish in the top ten for earned run average. Number four was Ronel Blanco at 2.80 and Number six was Framber Valdez at 2.91. Joshua Miller and Bill Murphy were their pitching coaches.
Over the years coaches like Kevin Long, Tony Beasley, Brian Butterfield, and Willie Randolph were never given their due credit.
It’s a damn shame when a team succeeds and the coaches get no love, but when the team fails the coach usually gets the axe. It’s about time that MLB acknowledges its coaches, who are the least appreciated men on the field.
