Big Ben Tuesday: The QB Carrousel Spins, Giants Watch

East Rutherford, NJ: Well, it’s been established that the Rangers ain’t going anywhere and the Knicks are not a real contender. As baseball is not really a thing yet, especially if you’re actively avoiding news about Gerrit Cole’s elbow like me, the most exciting topic in town is NFL free agency. QBs are changing places at the square dance and the Giants are one of the few teams left without a partner. Just standing there, looking forlorn. Do-si-do, and away we go, for what’s looking like another brutal season and a total housecleaning next offseason. On the bright side, expectations as low as a rattlesnake’s bellybutton, to steal a quote from a great American coach, albeit fictional, and there’s nowhere to go but up. Hell, six wins would feel like a success. Let’s see if we can figure out what the hell they’re doing.

The Raiders acquired Geno Smith, which freed up the Seahawks (not a real bird, fyi) to sign Sam Darnold. The Jets locked up Justin Fields. That leaves Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Tennessee with the Giants as the most QB-desperate teams left. The bad news is that two of them draft ahead of the Giants. And the other one, Pittsburgh, looks ready to sign Aaron Rodgers.

I know he’s 41 and did not play well, but this seems like a good landing spot for him. They’re committed to the run, which Rodgers needs because he can’t be dropping back 45 times a game. And with Metcalf, Pickens, and Freiermooooooooth, they have some weapons.

Where does that leave the Giants? Let me give you a hint. “Giants country, let’s stomp!?!With Tommy DeVito as the only QB on the roster, the Giants are probably looking to draft one. But they aren’t likely to land a guy ready to start day one, so they also need to sign someone capable of playing well enough to keep Daboll and Schoen employed. Enter Russell Wilson.

The Giants addressed one of their many needs by signing Adebo, a CB from the Saints. And today, they added Holland, the safety from the Dolphins. While these seems like decent moves, it seems to reveal that the plan is to fix the secondary via free agency. Which means they’re likely not interested in taking Travis Hunter, the Heisman winner unicorn CB/WR. I think that’s a mistake. When you’re as deficient as the Giants in so many areas, and there is no clear-cut top QB, why not take the draft’s most talented player?

Schoen needs to hit for a double cycle this offseason if he wants to save his legacy. Right now he’s “the mother effin son of a wh@re who let our most beloved player leave to help our most bitter rival win a championship.” As far as legacies go, it doesn’t get much worse than that. Dave Gettleman looks good by comparison.

Speaking of bitter, come back tomorrow for Angry Ward.
