Ben Whitney comes from journalistic stock. Aside from his brothers, rumor has that his great-great grandfather was the youngest brother of Eli Whitney and covered the earliest "rounders" games. Big Ben is also another New York Rugby Club player/pal of Different Matt, Short Matt and Junoir Blaber. He likes film noir discussions, has twin girls and took up ice hockey after retiring from rugby.

Big Ben Whitney: NFL Knee-Jerks, Chiefs vs Patriots Shootout in Classy “Foxborough”

FOXBOROUGH, MA – I am hoping Management will let me write a few extra posts this week, so I can put as many words as possible between my name and last week’s Giants’ Optimism turd sandwich. Can we agree to never mention it again? Thanks. Otherwise, it was a pretty exciting NFL week 6, highlighted […]

Big Ben Tuesday: 5 Reasons for Optimism for NY Giants in Giantsland

Last Place, NFC East: When the Giants were able to pull out a win against a mediocre Texans team a few weeks back, New York Giants fans got a little carried away with the “saved their season” hyperbole. I warned them not to get too excited, but they didn’t listen. But now, after losing on […]

BRONX, NJ – It was a satisfying final regular season weekend in Boston, as the New York Yankees locked up home field in the wildcard game, got to 100 wins, and broke the single season team HR record. Giancarlo Stanton got to 100 RBIs and Miguel Andujar broke Joe DiMaggio’s rookie doubles record. Even though they […]

Buffalo, NY: While the MTM staff debates whether DJ Eberle will go to Buffalo Bills Hell with Fred Smerlas, Scott Norwood, Vontae Davis, and OJ Simpson, or Buffalo Bills Heaven with Andre Reed, Bruce Smith, Don Beebe, and Jim Kelly, it is left to me to bang out some Hot Takes. Let’s call them Ben’s Week […]

It’s been a fun two weeks in the NFL, unless you’re a Giants fan. To avoid talking about them for at least another week, I’m going to focus on some standout off-the-field performances. This week we have a bloviator, an abdicator, and a dominator. The Bloviator I might be late to the game on this, […]

Big Ben Tuesday: Burt Reynolds, Kirk Cousins, and the Butterfly Effect

Cahulawassee River, Georgia: In chaos theory, butterfly effect refers to one small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear systems resulting in large differences in a later state. Got it? Like a butterfly flapping its wings and altering the path of a future tornado. In the mid-1970s, Burt Reynolds scoffed at an offer to play […]

Big Ben Tuesday: Giants or Jets, who will win more games?

Jersey Swamps, NJ: If you told me at the start of last season that the New York Jets would win five games, I would have believed you. Had you told me that would be more than the New York Giants, I would have laughed. Odds are good that they will finish with more than eight […]

Big Ben Whitney: Rocky IV, Yankees Make a Push, Year the Pats Unraveled

MOSCOW, USSR – It’s been over 32 years since Rocky Balboa avenged his friend and formal rival and turned the tide of the Cold War on Christmas Day in 1985. Much to Rock’s chagrin, tensions with Russia have returned. (Do you smell a corny, contrived device coming yet?) In the spirit of that legendary night, […]

Big Ben Friday: Oakland Athletics Making a Push for a Home Wild Card Game

Inverness, CA: I’m out here in the Bay Area, in West Marin, CA, where sub million dollar houses are a thing of the past. The folk out here generally cheer for the Giants, but quite a few have switched allegiances to slum it and cheer for the green and gold of the Oakland Athletics. The […]

Big Ben Tuesday: Yankees Can Still Win Division

Bronx, NY: The New York Yankees are nine and a half games back of the Red Sox through Sunday and the Sox are on pace to challenge for most wins in a season. It’s time for the Yankees to reel it in and cast their line closer to shore. The big fish got away and […]
