The Unrecognizable NBA

PORT JEFF,  NY– Spring, and more importantly baseball, are right around the corner. Can’t wait. But for now let’s talk some NBA!

The Unrecognizable NBA

What’s happened to the NBA? I can remember as a kid being incredibly excited to watch not only the game, but the dunk contest and especially the three-point contest. For whatever reason that shine is almost entirely gone.

Ironically, today’s NBA is more talented than ever. Players like LeBron have extended the league’s global reach and elevated skill across all positions. Yet the weekend designed to showcase that talent feels increasingly disconnected from the competitive fire that defines the regular season and playoffs.

In this new era of the NBA teams are no longer concerned with playing defense and are instead focused on building a team around three-point shooting and scoring as many points as possible. For years it was a ton of fun watching guys like LeBron and Dwayne Wade in the East go up against Kobe and Tim Duncan in the west and seeing those guys duel it out in the All-Star Game was a lot of fun. While I’d love to see a more competitive All-Star Game, I do understand why interest from the players has dwindled given the risk of injury. However, I don’t understand what’s happened to the dunk and three-point contests. Part of what made All-Star Saturday special was the combination of originality and star power. Fans tuned in knowing household names would be competing, and they cared about who won. Judges debated. Players reacted courtside. The arena buzzed with anticipation before every attempt.

The Dunk Contest struggles under the weight of its own history. Many established superstars opt out, wary of injury or unwilling to risk brand embarrassment with a failed attempt. It’s now reached an all-time low, with four competitors that most casual NBA fans couldn’t pick out of a lineup.

This NBA isn’t just missing the excitement of All-Star weekend. Regular season games are increasingly less important with players consistently sitting out not due to injury but for load management and half the league blatantly tanking to get as good chance at the number one pick as possible.

I’m not sure what could possibly incentivize players to compete in these contests and actually care about the regular season, but it’s very disappointing what’s happened to not only All-Star weekend but the league itself.
