New York, NY – Its finally February and we’ve made the turn towards the end of winter. That son of a whore groundhog teases us every year with his shadow/no shadow shell game. The tyranny has gone on long enough. Bill Murray had the right idea taking that rat over a cliff in a run-down pickup truck. And while there is a light at the end of the winter tunnel, that hasn’t stopped the one night stand between Old Man Winter and Mother Nature that produced this bastard child, Nemo that is getting set to dump several feet of snow on the northeast. So while you’re shut in by the second storm to end all storms in a matter of months, here are a few sports events you can follow to pass the time.
Friday afternoons are usually pretty slow sports-wise. But if you’re in a pinch, there’s always golf on. This week, its the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. So if you want to watch a bunch of people you’ve never heard of miss the cut in a tournament you don’t care about, tune into the the Golf Channel this afternoon for some hard-hitting links action. you could also watch paint dry or snow accumulate outside of your window. All equally exciting.
Friday night, Dude’s Knickerbockers take on the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Knicks are still flying high in the Atlantic division with a three game lead over the Brooklynettes. New York is only a game and a half behind the Miami Heat for the Eastern Conference lead. Mike Woodson and his painted on beard has the Knicks in tip-top shape. ‘Melo and ‘Mar’e are playing well together, even though Stoudamire looks about 14 years older than he actually is. Anthony has been hearing “MVP” chants this season, though I don’t think he has any real chance of winning.
Saturday morning, there’s plenty of Rugby action in the second round of the Six Nations Championship. Traditional whipping boys, Italy head to Scotland coming off of their shock win over France last week. Ususally, the only chance Italy has at a win is against the Scots. This year, the Eye-Tees will be looking to make it two from two and top the table heading into their next match against the sheep-loving Welsh. After the Scotland-Italy wooden spoon battle, you can watch France try to bounce back against Wales. The Frenchies will look to make Wales pay for last week’s broken plates by putting up some gaudy numbers against the dodgy-haired brits. It should be a good game.
Saturday afternoon, the Penguins travel to Newark to take on the Devils. Lets hope Nemo doesn’t necessitate the postponement of this game. It should be a great one between the top two teams in the Atlantic Division. I wish there was a way for both of these teams to lose in regulation. The Rangers don’t play again until Sunday.
Elsewhere Saturday afternoon, the Bruins take on the Lightning in another battle between top Eastern Conference teams. Tampa looks really frogging good, losses to the Rangers and Devils this week notwithstanding. They seem to score at will and are a very exciting team to watch. This is another game that Nemo may ruin, so lets keep our fingers crossed for some good hockey action Saturday afternoon.
After these games the snow should taper off and you’ll be able to leave your house again. Enjoy the rest of the weekend and stay safe.
