EL BARRIO, EL FALLS – Happy Monday. It was a weekend filled with more downs than ups from a sports perspective. There was news about 3 of my teams and picking one thing from each to talk about so I picked each team and decided to give some team news. Today’s piece will cover: NY Mets, NY Jets & NY Rangers Updates.
NY Mets Team News
This may just be the largest Mets collapse since 2007. 2007 was a bigger deal as it was later in the season and the Mets blew the
NL East on the final day. However, since the All-Star break, the Mets have stunk. They have gone from 3.5 up to 7 games back and can’t win to save their lives. While Short Matt blames the bullpen, I want to know why are the bats silent. We traded for Javier Baez at the break and he hasn’t been on the field enough and when on, he might as well be off. Frankie Lindor took the big money after a big trade and as usual for Mets fans hasn’t performed near worthwhile. The Mets are also 7 games out of the wildcard so things need to turn around quick but looks like this is another season of opportunity lost.
NY Jets
So maybe the Jets are cursed. The Jets spend big money on free agent edge rusher Carl Lawson and sure enough in a mixed practice on Friday, Lawson went down. After an MRI, it was confirmed he would out for the season with a torn Achilles. This is just like the Jets luck with big time free agent signings. They continue to get guys who can’t fulfill the contract for one reason or another. On the bright side, Zach Wilson looked good against the Green Bay second string as he threw for 2 touchdowns on Saturday. It seems like he has found his two favorite targets in TE Tyler Kroft and WR Corey Davis. This is a big positive especially as Kroft caught two red zone TDs on Saturday. Preseason doesn’t mean much but for what little it does mean, Wilson and the Jets offense are showing positive signs.
NY Rangers
This was a tough weekend for Rangers fans as one team legend retired and another headed for the big rink in the sky. Henrik Lundqvist, the gentleman Swede net minder that made NY his home for his whole career called it quits. Lundqvist was actually about to go to another club and try to win the elusive NHL title that missed him all his time in NYC when a heart murmur was discovered and so he took a year off to get healthy and assess things. In the end, he decided to hang them up. On the other side of the spectrum, Rod Gilbert, arguably the greatest to ever put on a Rangers jersey, has shed his mortal coil. Gilbert played right wing on the GAG line (Goal-A-Game line) with Vic Hadfield and Jean Ratelle. The kid from Montreal, who overcame two serious back surgeries, retired after 9 seasons over a contract dispute. He retired holding the team record for career goals and points as well as assists in a game consecutive games with an assist by a forward. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982, and was the first player in Rangers history to have his number retired. After his playing career, he became president of the Rangers’ alumni association. Rest in Peace, Mr. Ranger.
