Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let’s sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again
NEW YORK, NY – As the song says, Happy Days are here again! The crack of the bat. The balls smacking the leather [ahem]. The line drives and strikeouts and diving snatches. And it’s not on replays. It’s live. That’s right, live baseball is back on ESPN, as Angry Ward reported from his sunburned, bourbon-induced Florida haze yesterday. Granted, the televised games are from the KBO – not the Kick Boxing Organization, silly. It’s South Korea’s Korea Baseball Organization.
And they weren’t even the first to feel the rubber on the mound! The Chinese were anxiously moving around in the box in Taiwan before what looked to be the lone [two] Tampa Bay Rays fans. Ironically, it was the Chinese Professional Baseball League throwing pitches in anger first, giving us all that familiar taste of bats wreaking havoc… Yogi Berra is saying “Deja vu all over again” someplace.
Aside from the entertainment value, should we be worried about this development? The short answer is… YES. See, there are some rule changes that we should all fear some genius at MLB will decide would be great. The universal DH is one. Ties after 12 innings is another. My feelings on the DH in the National League are equal to my feelings about the Yankees; I hate them/it. As for extra innings, sell beer at half price after the 9th inning. Yes, you’ll have to start selling again after cutting everyone off in the 7th, but it’s a win-win for everyone! Oh, and their playoff format includes the Wild Card round having the higher seeded team hosting a two game series. The better team needs to win only one game. The lower seed, has to win both on the road to advance. This is already being bandied about by Theo Epstein, with a double-header starting a two-day, 3-game Wild Card. Stay tuned.
That’s all for today. Comment below and come back tomorrow for Buddy Diaz, who had an 11th hour epiphany last night and couldn’t be here today.
Happy Days are here again!
