Happy Bday, Mrs. Robinson!

NEW YORK, NY – There is a quote that goes like this, “Behind every successful man there is a woman behind him.” The poster girl for that woman has to be Rachel Robinson, the wife of trailblazer Jackie Robinson. Rachel turns one hundred years young on July 19th and a happy birthday to her should be acknowledged by the nation.

Throughout all the trauma she experienced during her husband’s baseball career, and her personal life, Rachel’s smile continues to shine.

I met her back in 2008 at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Citi Field. She sported a New York Mets jacket and her smile had more glitter than both the 1969 and 1986 World Series rings, which highlight the Mets franchise.

Rachel was excited about her new crib as she shared that she had a pad in the city. I still smile at the thought and remember the excitement in her voice, along with her school girl glee.

Memo to Commissioner Manfred: What do you have planned during All-Star week to acknowledge the milestone of the first lady of baseball? The festivities are at the home of the Dodgers, the same team that gave Rachel’s husband Jackie his chance.

Mrs. Robinson, you have a great birthday and may you cash in as many Social Security checks that you can.

Come back tomorrow for Short Matt.
