SPANISH HARLEM – Now that we have games being played in #SpringTraining, it’s an opportunity to see players that you might have heard about but never really saw play (unless you love watching Minor Leagues games). For fans, this is a time to get familiar with prospects on your team’s top ten list. In case you didn’t know, I’m a New York Yankees fan, so this will be about Bronx Bombers‘ hopefuls – and what all the hype is about.
Spencer Jones
The first player taken in the 1st round of last year’s draft, the team selected someone who is considered a lefty clone of Aaron Judge. While those are very big shoes to fill, he matches Judge in height at 6’7. He also plays center field – the same position that Judge played in the minors before moving to right. The comparisons don’t stop there. He is viewed as an athletic player for his size. The swing looks quick and smooth, so the potential is there. We will know more as he plays games against better competition.
Jasson Dominguez
I remember the first time I heard about this uber-international prospect signed by Yanks the at the tender age of 16. He is now 20 years old and though the Covid pandemic didn’t help his development, we can finally see what all the hype was about. Not only is he considered one of the best prospect in the organization, he could be among the 10 ten in the league when those rankings come out. Viewed as a 5 tool player with exceptional speed, plus arm and the power to be a special player. He hit a home run his first game that went viral soon after and that only makes you excited about the possibilities if he can put it all together.
Anthony Volpe
There is no one prospect that has been talked about more the last two years than Anthony Volpe. The young shortstop has moved through the minor leagues fairly easy, excelling at every level. He reached the Yankees Triple A club when Oswald Peraza was sent up to the Yankees in September. He is in contention to start the year with the club if he earns it, but something in my gut tells me they go Peraza, who is considered the best infielder in the organization. This gives Volpe more time to hone his skills and possibility get comfortable playing a new position at second base.
