Rain Man Rants: Redskins Cheerleader Scandal, Matt Harvey, NHL Playoffs

EL BARRIO, EL FALLS – This has been a busy but up and down week. Decent weather for a couple of days – for Buffalo – then bad for the last few. With no NFL Draft, there was some silence about what to do here. The sports world though always provide, though, and as such I found what I needed.  So, this week’s piece will feature the usual Song of the Week, followed by The Redskins Cheerleader Scandal, Matt Harvey and NHL Playoffs.

Song of the Week: I won’t get too deep into politics but I will say every time I turn on the news, I see what would have happened had Fredo led the family instead of Michael. All I can think about is halfway crooks and wannabe gangsters meet the spotlight. Small time white collar crime family hits the big time and now they are struggling. So with that as the background, this week’s Song of the Week is Shook Ones by Mobb Deep. I might have picked this already when one member of the group died but I don’t care, it is my piece so I do what I want.

Redskins Cheerleader Scandal: This shouldn’t surprise anyone. The sleaziest owner – in a league full of sleazy owners – is involved in this mess. For those that don’t know, according to the cheerleaders of the organization named after an Indian epithet,  a published report alleged that some cheerleaders were subjected to misogynistic and predatory behavior over the years. Topless photo shoots with management and friends invited took place, as well as being the cheerleaders being forced to be escorts to events. All I can say, to paraphrase an epic movie line is, “I am shocked, SHOCKED, to find misogyny going on at this organization or in this league.” Now the organization is coming out and saying they had differing accounts, so they didn’t know what to do… and decided to do nothing. Great work Sherlock, close the case. I mean, they are not even trying to bother with a proper cover and once again are blaming the girls. This is the same league that shrugged their shoulders while a woman took a knock-out punch but has blackballed Kaepernick for taking a political stand, so what do you expect??? I have to be honest and say it is not until you have a daughter as a man, do you realize how misogynistic the world is. It is outrageous but I am sure some lackey will fall on his sword on behalf of the emperor and the same people that can’t let Kaep go will forget about this.

Well, they got the “skin” part right.

Matt Harvey: I know, I know… he will leave NY and go on to win a Cy Young with a Cleveland (Indians and Redskins in same piece!) or Detroit or something like that. Mets fans booed him in his last outing after giving up more runs and exploding his ERA to a converted touchdown, 7.00. All he can say after that poor performance was “I have got to get better!” Well, duh! Don’t talk about it, just get better!! I would have sent him to the minors – like they wanted to – but Harvey said no. Rides on uncomfortable buses for 10 hours could have been exactly what he needed. Here’s a take on this by Deadspin.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: The Stanley Cup Playoffs provide far more intense games than the other three major sports because it is very likely that one goal can win it for a team and none of the other sports give you that feeling every game. So despite how as a Rangers fan, I feel the season is over, here is who I am rooting for in the four remaining series and why.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Boston Bruins
I am going with Tampa Bay. I hate them as a Rangers fan but I hate Boston winning more. I hate Boston in general but any kind of winning for that city disgusts me.

Washington Capitals vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
I am so sick of the Penguins winning and despite being the 4th best player on his on team Sid Crosby gets the MVP award. Screw them, lets give it to Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin. He has been working harder to be a better defender and the team really deserves it so I definitely am rooting for him.

Nashville Predators vs. Winnipeg Jets
Lets go Jets! I mean there has to be one good team called the Jets in sports. Besides they are the lone hope of Canada so easily root for them. I also root against warm weather teams unless they are up against long time NY Ranger rivals.

Vegas Golden Knights vs. San Jose Sharks
You gotta go with the Sharks. The Knights are a warm weather team like the Sharks but they are an expansion team and expansion teams are meant to suck, so we can’t have them going any further.
