SPANISH HARLEM – The Boston Red Sox finally signed J.D. Martinez and the Yankees traded for Brandon Drury. That’s what makes for news when the only sport being played is hockey. I will dig a little deeper into those moves and breakdown what it means for either club. Also with basketball back today, the New York Knicks somehow give me a reason to write about them.
Red Sox
I heard somewhere that the rivalry is back on. I don’t know about you but I never stopped hating the Red Sox. It angers me when the media states something that has been obvious for the last 90 years. With that said, the Sox had a good team before signing J.D. Martinez. Should the Yankees be worried… well yes actually, the Sox have a rotation lead by Chris Sale, who was 2nd in the Cy Young Awards and now have the power bat they coveted in Martinez. The way the Red Sox see it, they are the team to beat since they won the division last year and so the story goes… you have to be the best before you can become the best.
Yankees
On Tuesday the Yankees traded for Brandon Drury of the Arizona Diamondbacks, a young guy that plays multiple positions but seems best suited for 3rd base. The reports are that the Yankees were high on him and wanted to trade for him during the Winter Meetings but couldn’t find the right match. I like the move personally as it adds depth to a position of need and allows the team some flexibility if they feel Miguel Andujar needs more time in minors. It doesn’t mean that he won’t make the team but his chances just got more difficult. I never really thought the organization would take their chances with Adujar but don’t be surprised if at some point this season he becomes the regular 3rd baseman.
Knicks
The New York Knicks suck and as much as I wanted them to tank, I didn’t want to see Kristaps Porzingis get injured to finally stop talking about the playoffs. This team is flawed and eventually it was going to show it’s ugly face. Some of the veterans have played well for this team but its time the Knicks start the youth movement they spoke about in the beginning of the season. Let the young guys play… give Frank Ntilikina, Trey Burke and Emmanuel Mudiay more minutes, they will have their share of mistakes but it’s time to see what they can do with more playing time. They should also see what Damyean Dotson because from what I see, the kid can play some ball. Tell Jarrett Jack, thanks but no thanks, you will now ride the pine and become the veteran leader we signed you for.
They won’t lose every game because these guys are professionals and will bump into some wins but at the end of the day you want the best draft position possible. This organization can’t make the same mistakes, they have to lose and do it for the city. Some fans will hate to see this team lose but if it allows the team to get a transcendent player in the draft, all will be forgiven. Throw pride out the window… do it because its the right thing to do.
