SPANISH HARLEM – It took a long time for the New York Yankees to make a trade when Aaron Judge got hurt, it was worst for fans who had to endure the Shane Robinson experiment but the organization got it right when they traded for Andrew McCutchen. No one expected him to play much when Judge got back yet here he is playing everyday after Aaron Boone decided to stick with him over Brett Gardner. McCutchen has been an on-base machine since arriving in pinstripes and makes that lineup more potent for the likes of Judge, Didi Gregorius and Giancarlo Stanton, who bat behind him. While it must suck for Gardner, you can’t deny that McCutchen deserves to start for the foreseeable future and that includes the playoffs.
A couple of days ago the Yankees punched their ticket into the postseason on a play that saw Didi sliding head first into home plate as the winning run. Everybody was pumped and the champagne flowed in the clubhouse, they celebrated a hard earned win and also the opportunity to make a run for the Commissioners Trophy. All seemed great until the next day when news comes out that Gregorius tore the cartilage in his right wrist on the same exact play that clinched the postseason birth. Since the injury was announced, the diagnosis has gotten better and it looks like Didi will give it a go for the playoffs, just don’t expect him to play in any of the remaining games.
In other news, Gleyber Torres and Aaron Hicks are also dealing with injuries that will be monitored for the rest of the season. Torres has some lingering hip issues which plagued him in the second half of the season and it seems like something he will be dealing with until the season is over. Hicks on the other hand is dealing with a hamstring issue and those are never good, it can go from bad to worst in a hurry with that type of injury so expect the organization to keep him out of the lineup until the playoffs start. With that said, the Yankees have continued to win games without some keys players which allows Boone to give those players the time off they definitely need to receive treatment. The season will be over soon but that’s when the fun really starts, right now its all about getting healthy and making sure every player is ready go once playoff baseball starts.
