Aristotle On Sports: Let HoJo Show Bo!

FLUSHING, NY – One would think that a Major League Baseball owner is a savvy businessman. His successes in running his livelihood led to his reward of owning a big league club. The same philosophy is expected in producing a winning team, with that being, hire the best to be the best.

It’s the owner that gets final say in the hirings and firings on any big league staff. What goes on in the game today has me scratching my head.

Newly acquired Bo Bichette showed up way early to his NY Mets facilities down in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Bichette wanted to get acquainted with his new position as a third baseman. He took groundball after groundball under the tutelage of newly hired coach, Kai Correa. Correa is a Hawaii native who was appointed the bench coach. He is basically Manager Carlos Mendoza’s right hand man. Correa’s pro experience as a ballplayer is zilch. He was an infielder at the University of Puget Sound, where he graduated with a degree in U.S. History. Correa was then added to the baseball staff, where he made a name for himself by placing baseball instruction videos on social media. That led to a job with the San Francisco Giants and later the Cleveland Guardians.

Mets owner Steve Cohen is a hedge fund manager and financial trader. His day job is running CEO Point 72 Asset Management which has 41.5 billion dollars in assets. Cohen is known as the “Hedge Fund King.” The Hedge Fund King has revamped the coaching staff on the 2026 Mets by hiring coaches who never had a Major or Minor League at bat, or threw a Major or Minor league pitch. Their resumes mainly show a college degree in bullshit.

While Correa was tutoring Bichette his new third base position, Mets alumni Howard Johnson was on the side observing quietly. He liked what he saw in Bichette but knew better than to chime in.

HoJo was a 14-year veteran who took over third base for the Mets after 1986 World Series hero Ray Knight departed for free agency. Johnson was 24 years old at the time and under the N.Y. spotlight. He thrived with pulling a 30 for 30 three times. Johnson also came from Clearwater, Florida, where he was drafted out of High School before being picked again out of a JUCO.

The Mets new third baseman currently lives in Clearwater, Florida, so my question to Mr. Cohen is: Wouldn’t the experienced HoJo be a better mentor to Bo than who you have showing him the ropes in Correa? I guess experience doesn’t matter, but then again…

What do I know?
