SPANISH HARLEM – What a weird season this has been for the New York Yankees. Aaron Boone was brought in as a new manager and Giancarlo Stanton was traded for, just a season after winning the National League MVP. A lot was expected after their prior season success and many had them as one of the best teams in baseball before the season started. While the Bronx Bombers have had a good year, injuries have made them look venerable vulnerable recently but all is well as the team got back two big stars they need for the stretch run.
The Yanks have won over 90 games but right now it feels like they are reeling. Here we are with two weeks of baseball left and many fans still want to believe this team has what it takes to win another championship. Injuries have come in abundance the last month or so; it’s definitely caught up to them but Boone finally has all his players back. Aaron Judge was activated from the disabled list this week and the fans gave him a standing ovation. That’s how much he was missed in that lineup by the faithful, it’s like he is the savior they all needed for the Yankees to make another magical run. It will take some time for Judge to get back in the swings of things but he is still a deadly component of that lineup. He takes pitches and gets a ton of walks when he is not mashing the ball. It certainly helps to have him back but it will take him some time to feel totally comfortable in the box again.
Another player the Yankees got back this week was their closer, Aroldis Chapman, who has dealt with a lingering knee issue the whole second half of the season. Its important to have him back because he allows Aaron Boone the opportunity to use his guys in the best possible role instead of going with a closer by committee. Most fans have been baffled by some of the decisions Boone has made bringing in guys from the pen that normally would be not used and that cost them some games. The unknown is how healthy and effective crappy will be but at least he has some time to refine his skills before the season closes. Playoff time is almost upon and it’s great to see the band back together.
