SPANISH HARLEM – If you’re a New York Yankees fan, you approach the trading deadline with dread. You remember the moments when the Yankees made big moves and traded about every minor league prospect they had to get the player they wanted. That has changed in recent years and here is why.
Whether it was the Yankees over hyping their prospects or other teams overvaluing the talent in place, it seemed to me that they were always ready to pounce on the best guys in the trade market. The pass couple of years has shown the front office to be more frugal in that department, deciding to keep their top ranked minor leaguer over players that would help the team for the stretch run.
I know we sent a boatload of pitching prospects to the San Diego Padres for Juan Soto, which left them depleted this season for any big trades. Then you have to consider if the guys they trade for can play under the bright New York lights. All fair things to think about when making a trade but at least they had enough to add Jazz Chisholm, who has been a good bat in the line up since arriving.
While we know the Yankees wanted a starting pitcher but felt more comfortable trading for Mark Leiter Jr. and Enyel De Los Santos. Both players are high strikeout relief pitchers, which will add more depth in bullpen. We know they were in on Jack Flaherty but with concerns about his back, went to the Dodgers. Maybe Jasson Dominguez (who could have been traded) will help when healthy and maybe Spencer Jones becomes what we all hope he becomes or maybe nobody liked what they Yankees were offering. All in all, not great but not terrible and that’s the way it’s been for the Yankees, the last couple years.
Thats it for now, come back tomorrow for more content.
