Sports Rain Man: Mets Update, Olympic Thoughts

NIAGARA FALLS, NY Happy Monday! It is the last Monday in July and the 2024 Olympics just kicked off. Therefore, today’s piece will be simple and direct. It will be about the two things that happened of note this weekend. Here’s today’s menu: Mets Update, Olympic Thoughts

Mets Update

As usual, Jake Sternberg covered the Mets, yesterday. They just lost Kodai Senga for the rest of the year with a calf strain – in his first appearance of the season. Aaron Rodgers fans know what that’s like. Only the Mets and Jets would have that kind of luck. However, as he hasn’t been part of the Mets sizzling form the last two months, so it is far from the end of the world. However, he presented a chance for the Amazins to get their ace as they headed down the stretch. Now it’s back to the original plan, which is bolster the bullpen and hope the bats can stay hot enough to finish strong. It is not a crazy idea. They split the series with the Braves and remain 1.5 games behind them for the 1st Wild Card spot. If the Mets can keep the form they have had the last two months, they actually stand a chance of passing them. The 1st Wild Card spot gets to host a s 3-game series, so it is kinda important to a teams playoff chances.

Olympic Thoughts

Opening Ceremony

There had been a bit of a hullabaloo over the opening ceremony. Mainly, it was the scene of people dining at a table. It was men in drag and people took it to be mocking The Last Supper painting. I thought so too, because it seemed similar based on pictures. And the French mocking religion seemed very French. However, it turns out, it was based on the Feast of Dionysus, which makes more sense. French painting of the Greek Gods eating, which is fitting since the Olympics are a Greek concept.

Medal Count

So I see the USA tops the Medal Count and it is too be expected. America is so large and has a competitor in every sport. Now American athletes are not all making good money and all of that but with the shear size of this country and our high GD, our athletes are able to function in between the Olympics better than most of the competition. This allows the US to always top the medal count. Especially with no Soviet Union to challenge the US it is kind of a forgone conclusion who will win the most medals. I do want to see a medal count by a country’s population per capita. I think that would be a much better challenge.

Thanks for reading and come tomorrow to hear from the Ben Whitney, who will tell why the trade for Jazz Chisolm is a brilliant move and help the Yankees make the World Series.
