PORT JEFF, NY– Greetings, here’s what we’ve got for today. Lindor MVP, NL Wild Card Race
Lindor MVP?
The Mets beat the Padres 7-1 Saturday night, behind a pair of HR from Francisco Lindor. Lindor now leads the NL in WAR, and is pretty much a lock for a 30-30 season. Further, since early May he has an OPS well above 900. It appears Shohei Ohtani has run away with the MVP securing just the 7th 40-40 season in MLB history while also having a legitimate chance at winning the triple crown, but Lindor has truly been incredible in what might be the best season he’s ever had. Much of the turnaround from this Mets team can be attributed to how well Lindor has played this year. Aside from Mark Vientos, the entire lineup from Alonso, McNeil, Nimmo and others have all been very inconsistent and frankly disappointing for most of the year. Lets just enjoy it while we can, because this has truly been one of the best seasons we’ve ever seen from a New York Met.
NL Wild Card Race
Despite the heroics from Lindor and winning two of the first three in San Diego, the Mets have fallen to 2.5 games behind the Braves for the final Wild Card spot. The Bravos have caught fire in the face of adversity. They’ve lost Spencer Strider, Ronald Acuna, Austin Riley, and Ozzie Albies all for the remainder of the season. Despite their losses, Atlanta continues to find ways to win games. I’m skeptical of Atlanta’s ability to keep this up with so many injuries. BUT… they still have a phenomenal rotation led by NL CY Young favorite Chris Sale. Still, their lineup is severely depleted and I believe if the Mets continue to play good baseball they’ll have a good chance of passing Atlanta in the standings… Out west, the Padres have finally cooled down a bit and the Mets are just 4.5 games behind them… The Diamondbacks, however, have won another five consecutive games and have arguably been the best team in baseball over the last two months. It’ll be tough for the Mets to keep up with Arizona and San Diego. YET… If they can win today in San Diego, it will still all right in front of them, as they face the aforementioned D-Backs and the dreadful White Sox. If they can take care of business they can position themselves well heading into September.
That’s all for now. Feel free to comment below and come back tomorrow for Sports Rain Man and Realtor Supreme, Junoir Blaber.
