NIAGARA Falls, NY – Happy Monday, Gonna keep it short and sweet this week—I’m getting ready for the wife’s birthday tomorrow. Let’s dive into today’s topics: a New York Mets update, the Mets MLB Draft, and the Wimbledon Final.
NY Mets Update
The Mets had a .500 week. Yep—they took the first game against the Orioles before getting swept in the doubleheader. Then, they won the first two against KC and nearly took the last one, mounting a ninth-inning comeback before KC walked it off in the bottom of the inning.
The Mets are still haunted by bullpen issues. The opener strategy hurt them in the first game of the doubleheader against the Orioles, as Ryan Stanik underperformed, to say the least. Then, the bullpen couldn’t hold the tie last night against KC.
At this rate, it looks like David Stearns will be forced into a big trade for a starter or to clear space and acquire a couple of top-tier arms. Buyers are weird—nobody gives up major pieces for rentals, especially relievers—but the Mets might trade future draft picks for two or three of the best middle relievers in the league. If they’re smart, they’d grab two relievers and an innings-eating starter for the stretch run.
Mets MLB Draft
The Mets selected Mitch Voit (infielder, University of Michigan) and Antonio Jimenez (infielder, University of Central Florida) with the 34th pick. I don’t know much about these kids—the MLB Draft is confusing with its competitive balance rounds and weird rules. Plus, many draft picks never even sign with their original team because they get traded.
These kids could end up like Amed Rosario —a top prospect who was flipped for Francisco Lindor. Wouldn’t be surprised if some of these players get dealt before the deadline for pitching help. The Mets are already deep in the infield, so if they stay with the team, they’ll likely make their pro debuts in 2-3 years. Who knows what the plan is? Just hope the Mets keep drafting well and making smart trades to stay young and competitive.
The Wimbledon Final
Not as epic as the French Open final, but Jannik Sinner got revenge against Carlos Alcaraz. This one didn’t go five sets—Sinner had Alcaraz on the ropes and closed it out. Still a high-quality match, but the grass favored Sinner, and he seemed extra motivated to avoid another heartbreak.
Alcaraz did everything right leading up to the final, but Sinner’s game is just a puzzle he can’t always solve. Sinner now retains his No. 1 ranking and will look to hold it until the next major: the US Open.
Final Thoughts
The Mets’ need to look to make trades for pitching at the trading deadline. The Mets front office took two well regarded infielders with their first two picks in the draft as they look to stockpile. And in Tennis, Wimbledon Men’s final was good but not great or an instant classic.
