NIAGARA FALLS, NY – Happy Monday. I feel like we’re at the midway point of summer, and before you know it, it’s going to be over and the kids are going to be back in school—which isn’t a bad thing. With that said, you’ll get my thoughts on the All-Star Game, the week for the Mets, and the World Cup final.
All-Star Game
Congratulations to everyone who watched this. I think we should just become like every other nation and stop having All-Star games. Because it’s just gotten to the point where nobody cares.
What was important about them has dwindled because there’s so much money involved, players don’t want to get hurt, and teams don’t want their players to get hurt. And this isn’t just for this All-Star Game—this is for all the All-Star games. But I feel like baseball started the whole trend of being totally pointless. At some point, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game was considered the best All-Star game—it was really competitive. Then we had that draw… thank you, but see you late. It’s never been the same. The NBA game has gone down the drain, the football one is a joke, and hockey had to create a whole different International competition to get people’s attention.
Should this be stopped? Yeah, I’m to the point where we just need to give the players a break and call it a day.
NY Mets Week In Review
The Mets finally had a week where they won more than they lost. I mean, it could be because they had only half a week since the first part of the week was taken up by the All-Star break. But who wants to be a different guy? I’ll just accept the great news.
The Mets won a game on Thursday night, had Friday off—their game was moved due to the expected smoke out that was happening in Canada—and then Saturday they lost bad, but come Sunday they won very well.
It is a good start to the second half. I don’t know what it means right now. They still look like they will be sellers at the trade deadline, unless they get on a hot streak like the Red Sox and then maybe they might have a chance. But who knows. They’ve done a lot of selling in recent years, so they actually have a decently stocked minors. Though you can never have too many prospects because you don’t know who’s going to pan out and who’s not, and that could also always be future trade material at the deadline next year.
World Cup Final
Spain are out as champions. All of the world is happy that Argentina did not win.
The behavior of Argentina after they beat England—players coming off the bench and then holding a political banner, which was somehow excused by FIFA—is insane. And then starting a fight after losing yesterday.
On the bird app an rest of social media, I’m glad that people are seeing just how horrible the fans are. Which is crazy because McCarthy will tell you we’ve met and played with Argentine rugby players, and there are some of the most wonderful guys we’ve ever played with. So I don’t know what happens to these football people. But I’m glad they lost, and those fans are horrible.
Come back tomorrow for The Big Aristotle.
