SPANISH HARLEM – I forgot to mention this last week on the bad news for the New York Yankees but now I can go a bit more into the fact that Giancarlo Stanton is once again hurt during his ramp up from his prior calf injury. He has now hurt the other calf during a fall he sustained while do some running drills and is out for the season. It’s not the news you wanted to hear considering how well he has done in the playoffs but it’s safe to ask if the Yankees should continue to keep on the roster pass this season.
The numbers I saw showing how many games played Stanton has versus games missed since becoming a Yankee are staggering. He has missed just has many games as he has started and that is so sad to see. Sure, we all know he has missed a lot of games, but when you see the amount, it shows the wasted potential of what he could of have been with the Yankees. I know it’s not his fault because when your body betrays you over and over again, it becomes routine and there is nothing he or anyone can do to change it.
The question now is if the Yankees will continue paying out his contract as a Yankee. It seems that the moves they made at the trade deadline were possible reinforcements not just for this season but the next as well. Both Gacia and Ramos have two years left on their current deals and most certainly will be on the team next season unless they are somehow traded in the offseason. Both players provide depth in the lineup and for the offense in general.
Keeping Stanton on the roster is tough because he can only be a DH, so he doesn’t provide any roster flexibility for them in anyway whatsoever. He can’t run when gets on base and how many times have we seen him jogging around the bases because more often than not sprinting would injure him. His lower body is betraying him playing baseball and it’s almost expected that he will be injured at some point during the season.
While I love Stanton as a player, he is just not a roster piece you can keep on this team anymore. I hope he continues to play somewhere and gets to 500 home runs because he does deserve to reach that milestone, but he provides the Yankees no real depth and has become someone they can’t rely on.
