SPANISH HARLEM – Bye bye Anthony Volpe and hello George Lombard Jr., how it took this long is still beyond me. Also, my thoughts on the Yankees trade deadline, what they acquired what they didn’t, so let’s jump right into it.
Luis Garcia. Jr. and Heliot Ramos
Gracia is already the Yankees best contact hitter batting .285 and should help a struggling offense. He has a sweet swing and is a New York native, all things I can root for. Breakout season or not, he should be a nice piece for the Yankees moving forward.
Ramos mashes lefties and we needed that considering how lefty dependent this line up is. He may not be the big-name fans clamor for and I get that, they expect the exciting players that can change a franchise but sometimes these are the type of players that can help you win games and the Yankees need all the offense they can get right now.
What they DIDN’T get?
They needed a catcher, any catcher that is better than Austin Wells. Sure, a righty bat that could play every day was ideal, but it seems Cashman didn’t like the asking price. Still, it is downright nonsense that he couldn’t someone to help at catcher. There are a ton of catchers better than Ali Sanchez that wouldn’t deplete the farm system so this is a complete failure on Cashman’s part.
George Lombard, Jr. is the Future
Finally, we get see someone not Anthony Volpe man the shortstop position. He was flawed form the very beginning, yet he was given every chance to succeed. He was allowed to fail too many times to count and maybe sometimes to his detriment.
Now, Lombard, Jr. is given the keys and while fans want him to be the next Jeter, know that he will have his ups and downs. Hopefully, he is the guy they always needed but they also need to be patient. He is not the Yankees savior.
