Port Jeff NY- Greetings, let’s talk some New York Baseball: Mets Stay Hot and Yankees Make Moves
Mets Win 6th Straight
It’s been a fantastic week for the Mets. Fresh off a sweep of the Angels they’ve taken the first two from the Giants against two of the best pitchers in the NL Logan Webb and Robbie Ray. After a really tough stretch where they just weren’t hitting that seemed to last forever, this team has rebounded in the face of adversity in a way it just hasn’t done in years past. I think a lot of that can be attributed to the culture David Sterns and Carlos Mendoza have built throughout this organization. In years past this team would’ve folded after their brutal June stretch. With Marte and Baty heating up its added depth to this lineup that’s lacked production at the bottom of the order throughout much of the year.
Amazin’ Acquisitions
The Mets traded for Gregory Soto from the Orioles. I like this move a lot. Soto while inconsistent at times is a very solid left handed out of the pen. With Brooks Raley returning from the IL and looking solid early on, this bullpen looks really well positioned. Edwin Diaz is quietly having another dominant season as the leagues best closer, and Reed Garrett continues to be a revelation as the set up man. I think they could potentially add one more arm in the bullpen before next weeks deadline, however I feel really good about the way it’s come together if they decide they’re set in the bullpen.
Potential targets.
While Baty has been much better of late, I think this team should be in the market for one more big bat. The D-Backs are expected to trade Eugenio Suarez who is having another exceptional offensive season with 36 HR. I don’t think it would break the bank to acquire Suarez and he might be the piece that puts this team over as the best in the NL.
Yankees Make Moves & Judge Injury
The Yankees have acquired Ryan McMahon and Amed Rosario. They’re both fine moves. McMahon, however, has extremely drastic splits away from the hitter haven that is Coors Field. He’s an excellent defender, though, and his left handed power should translate well to Yankee Stadium – which is the AL’s Coors Field/Little League park. As for the former Met Rosario, he’s become a very solid player who mashes left handed pitching and plays very good defense.
I like both these moves for the Yankees, though I think they’re in need of another big bat to bolster this lineup. All of this has been overshadowed by the injury to Aaron Judge. Judge was placed on the IL with a flexor strain in his right elbow. We’ve seen this injury in pitchers and it almost always results in Tommy John surgery. According to Aaron Boone the team is hopeful he’ll return after the minimum on the IL, at which point Judge will DH for the time being. It goes without saying if Judge is to miss any extended period of time this team has no shot at a deep playoff run. Even with Judge the Yankees have fallen to 6.5 games out of first place behind the Blue Jays. Luckily for the Yankees, outside of Toronto, much of the AL is not playing well. If they can get Judge back there’s no reason this team can’t be a dangerous Wild Card team capable of making a deep run.
