NEW YORK, NY – The New York Football Giants come into this Sunday’s crucial match-up against the Pittsburgh Steelers riding high on a string of six good, but unconvincing wins. And they still trail the Cowboys (at time of writing) by two games. So this is another must-win for the G-men if they want to keep pace with the ‘Boys and/or lock up the Wild Card.
The Giants and Cowboys collide next Sunday night in a battle that will surely decide the division. The Giants beat the Cowboys in the Big D the first week of the season. The Cowboys haven’t lost since. Big Blue has a tough run-in to the end of the season. After Sunday’s bout in Pittsburgh and next week’s showdown against Dallas, the Giants have games against the Lions, Eagles, and Redskins. They’ll need to win a couple of these games to lock up a Wild Card berth. They’ll need to run the table and hope the Cowboys slip up to take the division. That seems like too much for a Giants team whose play has been very average but whose results have been great. Time will tell how things shake out for Mr. McAdoo’s Mammoths.
On the ice, the Rangers have been very average of late. They’ve come back down to earth after the hot start to the season. They’ve been bitten by the injury bug, which hasn’t helped. Mika Zibanejad has been sidelined with a broken leg and will probably be out through the New Year. Last night the Rangers gave up a lead to lose to a Buffalo Sabres team (whose ONE FAN is DJ Eberle) boosted by the recent return of Jack Eichel to the lineup. After last Sunday’s lamestain performance at the garden against the Ottawa Senators, the Blueshirts could have benefitted from going on another run. But last night’s loss after their come-from-behind win against the Carolina Hurricanes has them back in the doldrums.
Up next for the Broadway Blues is a Saturday Matinee against the ‘Canes at the Garden. Let’s hope Alain Vgneault’s men can get back to wining ways. They still need some help on the back end. The defensemen have been inconsistent at best. Kevin Klein was a healthy scratch last night in favor of Adam Clendening. The Rangers will have to make a trade to bolster the defense. It remains to be seen who will be shipped out. Rumors have been circling around JT Miller as trade bait. Miller has played well this season and it would be a shame to see him go. But the Blueshirts need a top-four defenseman. There are still a few months left until the trade deadline and a lot can change. Time will tell.
Oh… And the Metsies made a big splash bringing back Yoenis Cespedes. [Yawn].
