New Lows for Giants and Jets

PORT JEFF, NY- Greetings. Let’s talk the disaster that it is the current state of New York Football. New Lows for Giants and Jets

Giants Cut Jones

The Daniel Jones era in New York has finally come to an end with the Giants releasing him. This was a truly bizarre sequence of events from the organization. First Jones was understandably benched, but not just benched, demoted to fourth string and playing scout team safety in practice. Following that, Jones requested his release which the team granted. What makes this even more bizarre is by granting Jones his release the team will take on 47 million in dead cap next year. I’m not here to defend Jones, he simply wasn’t good enough for almost the entirety of his time as a Giant. However, let’s not pretend he was set up for success throughout his duration on this team. Since entering the league Jones had to endure the disastrous head coaching hires of Pat Shurmur and Joe Judge as the Head Coach, and having the grossly incompetent Jason Garrett as his offensive coordinator. On top of the coaching mess, throughout much of Jones’ career with the Giants, they had perhaps the worst O-Line and skill position players in football. While Jones is certainly to blame for his poor play, ownership has continued to make baffling decisions since the departure of Tom Coughlin. I’m not sure what comes next for the Giants, they have very little cap space and aren’t locked into a top 3 pick with so many bottom feeder teams in this particular year. Though the decision to turn to Tommy DeVito for likely the remainder of the year almost solidifies they will be picking atop the 2025 draft. For what it’s worth I think Brian Daboll should be given the chance to coach next year and enter with a fresh start and a new QB.

Jets Outlook

If you think the Giants are a mess, just take a look at what’s going on with the Jets. After yet another crushing loss this past Sunday, the Jets fell to 3-8 on the season and they subsequently fired GM Joe Douglas. First Robert Salah, now Douglas. I’m not sure who the blame should fall on, though I don’t think Douglas or Salah should be the ones to take all of it. This was a roster that Aaron Rodgers curated to ensure his transition to the Jets would be as smooth as possible. The defense has been an abject failure since Salah was fired, and of course that’s a huge part of why this team has underachieved, but make no mistake Aaron Rodgers deserves a large share of the blame for this nightmare of a season. He simply hasn’t been good enough to win games consistently in the NFL.

Jacob Sternberg

The Jets are now considering either placing Rodgers on IR or benching him for the rest of the season and likely ending his brief stint at QB of the Jets. Rodgers apparently still wants to play next year, however not for the Jets. I genuinely can’t think of a single team not only willing to pay Rodgers what he thinks he’s worth but also forging their entire roster and coaching staff to his exact desire. For the Jets, they still have a very talented roster that should be good enough to win games. If Woody Johnson can somehow make a competent decision and hire an adult as GM to handpick a Head Coach and possibly draft a QB of the future, there’s no reason this team can’t be competitive next year.
