Pat Murphy: shoulders above

MILWAUKEE, WI – When the winner of the National League Manager of the Year was announced, Milwaukee Brewers Skipper Pat Murphy seemed to have one thing on his mind – his son’s practice. The father of four hurried to wrap up his interview with the MLB Network as his 10-year-old son Austin was by his side. Austin’s team is playing in a tournament this weekend and practice was a priority.

On the eve of winning one of baseball’s major awards, his kid’s interest came first. Murphy’s older son, 23-year-old Kai, is an outfielder in the San Diego Padres system. He’s also the co-owner of The 200 Club, whose motto is, Be F*cking Relentless.

Kai’s explanation of the gym wear brand is, “200 Club is way more than just a brand or a saying, it is a way of life. It makes you unbreakable, and you can take that into everything you do in life.” For 200 Club, which Papa Pat is the founder. It’s all about the mental aspect of the athlete.

The saying of, Be F*cking Relentless was inspired by the late legendary sports psychologist Harvey Dorfman, who instilled a By Any Means Necessary mentality in his preaching.

Legendary college coach Murphy has paid his dues on his way to managing in the big-league level. That 200 Club mentality is a huge reason for where he is now. Not only has he passed the attitude to his Brewers team, but also to his four kids. Austin will carry that drive into his tournament games. With an upcoming birthday celebration, and the title of Manager of the Year, all Murphy has to do is continue to be f*cking relentless. You’ve come a long way my friend, and you’re getting better with age.
