SPANISH HARLEM – The New York Giants were hoping to turn their season around and with the NFC East up for grabs, anything was possible as long as they kept winning. That did not happen as they lost a tough game against the Philadelphia Eagles, who have had their own issues of late. As an Eagles fan, I wasn’t confident in their play and division games are always the hardest so I fully expected the Giants to play well and that they did for the 1st half of the game. The Eagles couldn’t do much on offense and the Giants controlled the game with Saquon Barkley.
But as good as they looked in the first half, they couldn’t continue that momentum. Carson Wentz, with some good run blocking for Josh Adams, was able to put up the points they needed to finally take the lead early in the 4th quarter. It wasn’t a game they should of won because I thought the Giants looked like the better team for much of the game but that’s the type of season the Giants are having, they couldn’t close it out and instead saw their playoff hopes vanish. With the win, the Eagles kept their own playoff hopes alive but this is not the complete team from a year ago. It won’t get any easier from here on out for the Iggles, they will have to play better if they want to take the division.
The main story for the New York Knicks was the return of David Fizdale to Memphis, where he was fired from his first ever head coaching job. The team wanted to this win for him and you could see it with their play late in the 4th quarter. That is usually the time this team falters but they came out with an energy that you rarely see against one of the betters team in the Western Conference, and who hold a home record of 7-1 until last night. Emmanuel Mudiay has played well the last couple of games and his confidence continues to soar. This is not the same player we saw last year with the Knicks and conditioning has been a factor. He has a bounce to his step that was rarely seen a year ago and truly seems to enjoy playing with Fizdale. I still believe that having too many point guard means you don’t have a good one but if he continues to thrive under Fizdale, they may finally have someone they can depend on.
It was a good road win against a better team and those won’t come around to often so it was nice to see but it probably feels better for Fizdale. It had to feel good to leave that town on top, even if it was for only game.
