NIAGARA FALLS, NY – Happy Monday! And I guess a belated Happy Father’s Day to all the MTM staff Dads and their Dads (Heavenly and Earthly). With all that lovely stuff, I had to dig deep to find topics for today’s piece to keep from talking about the same things as last week. So, here’s today’s menu: Mets Have A Pulse, Utah Hockey, Euro 2024.
Mets Have A Pulse
Cancel the time of Death notice on the Mets season. There appears to be a pulse. The Mets have won 5 in a row. This moves them 4 games under .500 and they are currently 1.5 games out of the playoff spot – with loads of other teams. What has been impressive has been how all the facets of the team have been coming through. The starting pitching, the bullpen and the hitting. It has really been clutch hitting that has caught my eye. JD Martinez was on fire the whole 3-game series against the Padres. The closer by committee held on until the real Edwin Diaz returns. The starting pitchers, who are an unimpressive bunch, had solids outing, too. If the Mets can win the next batch of games and go 10 for 12 or something like then they legitimately can be in the hunt for the Wild Card.
Utah Hockey
I can’t help but laugh at the Phoenix Coyotes. This ownership group could have kept them in Winnipeg but decided to move them to Phoenix, thinking they could cash in on the Gretzky-effect moving to one of the largest cities in North America. But that failed miserably – twice. They failed in the Phoenix Suns arena so bad they had to go into the smaller Arizona State arena. They have been searching for a home that last year or so. They could have had a team in Kitchener or Hamilton, which wasn’t sexy – but assured great attendance. So they moved to Utah. It may have the hockey hungry fans to keep the place full like they do with the Utah Jazz.
Euro 2024
So it’s time to find the best footballing nation in Europe. We are still in the opening round of games but it is clear there are a few favorites looking good. Host Germany and Spain are options as favorites… England have not looked impressive in their win, and France remain the favorites, though they haven’t taken the field… Crotia was one of the dark horse sides but they didn’t look to hot against Spain… The Dutch also looked unimpressive. It is just one round so anything can happen. However, Germany look like the clear best team so far. Are you still awake?
