NOTE: The New York Mets are now just 6.5 games behind the New York Yankees.
PORT JEFF, NY – It’s been a minute. [Exhaling] Let’s dive in with today’s talking points: Grifol Out As Sox Skipper, Giants Preseason Reactions, Mets Big Series Win!
Grifol Out As Sox Skipper
As many of you have likely heard, the White Sox stink! As a die-hard baseball fan, I just had to chime in on the firing of Pedro Grifol. The Chi-Sox enter today at 28-89, with a chance to finish with the worst record in the history of all of baseball. As I listened to the White sox GM Chris Getz explain why he decided to wait this long to fire Pedro, he quipped, “Quite frankly, the talent level is not where it should be, and we need to fix that.’” As someone who grew up in the Wilpon era, I can sympathize with the Southsiders on how hard it can be to be loyal to a team who doesn’t seem to want to win. The interim manager is Grady Sizemore.Yes, THAT Grady Sizemore. This is obviously a lost season for the club, and they will look outside the organization to hire their next skipper.
Mets Big Series Win
Following a 31–13 stretch, the Metros have cooled off just a tad. Before Thursday, they were on the outside looking in on that last Wild Card spot in the NL, but by rolling the Rockies, combined with a loss by the Braves, the Mets have leapfrogged in front to put themselves back into the third Wild Card. They are only 2.5 games back of the Diamondbacks and Padres, who don’t seem to do much losing these days. Perhaps the biggest storyline in this particular series was how great the starting pitching was. Outside a few bad breaks, Luis Severino was fine. Paul Blackburn was absolute nails once again, and David Peterson was great! In a tough place to pitch, the Met’s rotation was money. The bullpen is starting to find its footing once again, and will be getting some reinforcements in the coming days, as they head to Seattle to take on Angry Ward’s Mariners.
Giants Preseason Reactions
2nd year RB Eric Gray made a claim to be the team’s backup halfback with an impressive preseason debut. Drew Lock, who the Giants signed to back up Daniel Jones, was rather less than impressive. Tommy Devito, who many of you know from his linsanity run last season, showed some flashes in the first game. On the other side of the ball, rookie safety Tyler Nubin looked like a star, as he was all over the field. Staying on this side of the ball, 2nd year DT Jordon Riley looked like a beast, and should see an increased role.
That’s all for me today. Feel free to weigh in below and come back tomorrow for Aristotle “Mugsy” Sakellaridis… and as per Management, check this out curiously entertaining show:
