PORT JEFF, NY – Greetings. We’ve made it a whole week without baseball – only three months to go! Until then let’s talk some football: NFL Trade Deadline Look-back
NFL Trade Deadline Lookback
Jets Trade Gardner & Williams.
I love how the Jets handled this trade deadline. Too often, we see teams unwilling to part ways with their best players even if the rest of the roster is terrible. The Jets are 1-7 and don’t have a QB of the future. By the time this team’s ready to compete again, Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams will be past their prime. Gang Green received two first round picks for Gardner, an additional first and second round pick for Williams. I think the Jets did a fantastic job getting maximum value for players who frankly haven’t helped this team win games.
I look at it like this: They’re 1-7 with those guys, they can easily finish the year the same without them. The Jets made the smart move and finally admitted they’re not a good team and now have an excellent shot at rebuilding this roster over the next few years.

From the Colts perspective, I don’t love it. Gardner is a very good player but I don’t think this move puts a team like the Colts at the level of the elite in the AFC. Over the course of the first two months of the year the colts have had the best offense in football and there’s really no disputing that. Aside from the clunker last week, Daniel Jones, along with his backfield counterpart Jonathan Taylor, have played at an MVP level. However, they’ve played an exceptionally easy schedule and I simply do not have faith that Danny Dimes will continue playing at this high of a level. Maybe I’m wrong and the Colts steamroll through the AFC, but I think they overpaid for Gardner here.
As for the other trade, I can’t fathom what the Cowboys are doing. They’re 3-5-1 and have one of the worst defenses I’ve ever seen. They traded Micah Parsons before the season because Jerry Jones didn’t want to pay him. Williams is an excellent player, but he alone doesn’t improve the Cowboys defense. Aplayer like Parsons does. I don’t understand why they’d trade Parsons, and then two months later trade for another expensive defensive player. But that’s Jerry World.
