Mets Core Breaks Up, Johnnies Big Win, Cena Officially Retires

PORT JEFF, NY – GM hoping everyone’s doing better than us Mets fans. Here’s the rundown: Mets Core Breaks Up, Johnnies Big Win, Cena Officially Retires

Mets Core Breaks Up

And this offseason has been an absolute nightmare for New York. Trading Brandon Nimmo is one thing, but losing Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz are two catastrophic mistakes by David Stearns. Starting with Díaz, letting him go for three years and $70 million is a disgrace—since 2022, he’s been, if not the best, a top-three closer in baseball. Losing him to the Dodgers of all teams makes it sting even more. I’m usually optimistic about my Mets, but losing Díaz is a massive blow. As if that wasn’t enough, Pete Alonso, one of the heart and souls of this team, is now in Baltimore. Sure, 5 years and $155 million is steep, but for one of the premier power hitters in baseball, it made sense to do everything possible to keep him. What’s most jarring about this offseason is going into it with seemingly no plan. Marcus Semien is a solid second baseman, Devin Williams is a fine late-inning reliever, but this feels like a Wilpon-era Mets team. As much as I hate to say it, anything short of adding someone like Kyle Tucker, Framber Valdez, or even trading for Tarik Skubal feels like a massive failure. We’ve already seen Dylan Cease and Robert Suarez come off the board since losing Díaz and Alonso—Stearns desperately needs a big move.

After a tough trip to Vegas, the Johnnies came home to MSG, where my brother Jacob and I watched the 23rd-ranked Red Storm face Ole Miss. It was a defensive slugfest and exactly the kind of game St. John’s needed to reclaim their identity—playing hard-nosed defense and outworking everyone on the floor. They did just that for 40 minutes, securing a 63–58 win over a team equally known for defense and toughness. On top of that, it’s incredible to see how far this program has come under Rick Pitino, playing a game of this magnitude at the world’s most famous arena in early December as the top team between the two. It’s not lost on me, or any other fans, how special it feels to truly be New York’s team again.

For someone who grew up during his era as “the guy” in the company, it feels a bit somber. With stars like Randy Orton, AJ Styles, and even Triple H now in the twilight of their careers, it makes me reflect on all the great matches, promos, and segments Cena was a part of.
