Knicks vs Spurs and Greatest Sports Comebacks

PORT JEFF, NY –  Have I mentioned it’s Friday? No? Well, it’s Friday. And I know you’re in a rush to go sit in traffic someplace so let’s keep this short and sweet (like Short Matt): Knicks vs Spurs and Greatest Sports Comebacks

Knicks vs Spurs

As if the Knicks’ season hadn’t been wild enough, they may have just pulled off the greatest comeback in sports history. Sitting here on Friday talking about it doesn’t do justice to watching it unfold live. It had all the makings of a game they just weren’t meant to win—Dylan Harper hitting impossible shots, Wemby  grabbing every rebound and blocking everything in sight. Down by as many as 29 points, it felt over—until it wasn’t. As Karl-Anthony Towns stepped to the line for two technical free throws after a flagrant one on Wembanyama, the Knicks decided they weren’t losing this game in front of a sold-out Madison Square Garden, maybe the loudest it’s ever been. Led once again by Jalen Brunson and OG, they stunned the Spurs 107-106. This is a game we’ll be talking about for the rest of our lives.

Greatest Sports Comebacks

The greatest comebacks are often the most unforgettable moments in sports. Following the Knicks’ historic rally, my brother and I discussed other comebacks that deserve recognition and how they compare. For me, the Atlanta Falcons’ infamous 28–3 collapse in the Super Bowl will always rank first, primarily because it occurred on the sport’s grandest stage. Although the Knicks’ series is still ongoing, another devastating memory is the Mets surrendering a nine-run lead in the ninth inning against the Washington Nationals in 2019. While opinions may vary, my third choice would be the 2016 Golden State Warriors’ loss after holding a 3–1 lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Although this was the result of a series rather than a single game, the fact that a team featuring Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Klay Thompson could relinquish such an advantage remains astonishing.
