Runaway at the U.S. Open
After early-week complaints that the course wasn’t playing tough enough, Shinnecock Hills has once again reminded everyone why it’s considered one of the world’s greatest championship venues. Heading into Sunday’s final round, only five players sit under par for the tournament. Yet one man has separated himself from the field.
Thanks largely to an opening-round 64, Wyndham Clark enters the final round at 7-under par, holding a commanding six-shot lead.
The 2023 U.S. Open champion has been one of the hottest players in golf over the past month, and that form has been on full display all week. Clark has been nothing short of clutch on the greens, repeatedly burying pressure-packed par putts right in the heart of the cup whenever momentum threatened to swing.
After grinding through a stretch of key par saves, Clark may have delivered the tournament’s defining moment on the par-5 16th Saturday afternoon. He hit a brilliant approach that settled just five feet from the hole, then calmly rolled in the eagle putt to stretch his advantage and all but seize control of the championship.
This has been one of the most impressive major championship performances we’ve seen in recent memory. Clark isn’t simply leading—he’s lapping the field on one of the toughest golf courses in the world.
Among the players tied for second at 1-under is world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who will join Clark in Sunday’s final pairing. Scheffler will undoubtedly spend Saturday night thinking about the four putts he missed from inside 10 feet on the back nine—misses that could have at least given him a puncher’s chance entering the final round.
If Clark finishes the job, he’ll claim his second U.S. Open title and join the exclusive club of multiple major champions. More importantly, he’ll firmly reestablish himself as one of the elite players in the game.
