Fantasy Football, the Yankees and Tanner Glass are All Terrible

NFL.com-Fantasy-FootballNEW YORK, NY – I’m sure a lot of people watched last night’s NFL curtain raiser between the defending champion Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers. I can’t believe it’s football season again. I feel like i just watched the Seahawks abuse Peyton and Cookie’s Broncos in the Super Bowl.

I hope everyone did well in their fantasy football drafts. I didn’t. I hate fantasy football. I hate the sight of guys at bars on Sunday afternoon staring at their iPads, checking fantasy stats and paying no attention to what is actually happening in the games. I hate the grip the NFL has on the country for five months. Every year I tell myself I’m not going to participate anymore. But every year I find myself right back in the thick of mock drafts and figuring out my draft strategy. This year, I followed my strategy but still wasn’t satisfied with the result. I never will be. That’s it. I’m calling it again. This is my last season of fantasy football.

Derek_Jeter_Hit_-2722_editOn the baseball diamond, the Yankees have been playing some decent baseball and winning some games. But they still find themselves on the outside looking in. The Bombers haven’t really gained any ground in the race for the second wild card over the last couple of weeks. They’re still 4 games behind the Tigers and Angry Ward’s Mariners. The Yanks are running out of time if they’re going to sneak into the playoffs. They have 24 games left and they’ll have to win 17 or 18 of those games to beat out the Tigers and Mariners. While it’s not impossible for the Yankees to play at a .750 clip down the stretch, it’s not likely based on current form.

They do have a favorable schedule down the stretch, though. They have six games against the Rays and eight games against an Orioles team that has all but clinched the AL East. Hopefully for Yankee fans, the Orioles start resting their regulars to keep fresh for a playoff run. The Yankees also have a handful of games against the Blue Jays who are nipping at the Yankees’ heels in the wild card race. The Bombers finish the season at last placed Boston, who will definitely be looking to play spoiler.

What useless looks like.

Up next for the Yankees is a weekend set against the first place Kansas City Royals. No that is not a typo. The Royals are in first place and keeping the Tigers at bay for the moment. The Royals will fade down the stretch and miss the playoffs but for now they will be tough competition for the Yanks. It’s the start to a tough road to the playoffs and I think the Yanks will fall short, meaning Derek Jeter’s last baseball game will be played at Fenway Park.

Hockey season is right around the corner and I’m moderately happy with the Rangers’ acquisitions this offseason. Except the addition of Tanner Glass. This may be the worst in a long history of terrible moves for the Rangers. Glass is as close to useless as a professional athlete can be. He serves no purpose on this team. He’s not worth the paper his contract was signed on, let alone the $1.5 mil a year the Rangers will be paying him. Hopefully it’s all part of some grand scheme from Alain Vigneault that I don’t know about.

Thats all for me today. Come back tomorrow for Junoir Blaber, enjoy your weekend and good luck with your fantasy football teams on Sunday.
