HOLBROOK, NY – Let’s cut through the pleasantries and get down to business. Your hangover from all those State of the Union parties demand we do so. Grab a Bloody Mary and drink these babies in: Giants Done With Danny Dimes? Mets Spring Training Surprises, March Madness Preview!
Giants Done With Danny Dimes?
Over the past number of weeks, it has grown increasingly obvious that Danny’s Dimes’ time in New York may be up. According to multiple sources around the NFL, Joe Schoen & Co had buyers for Jones after giving Jones a 4-year 160 million dollar contract. There are multiple ways to look at this. Could the Jints just be trying to see what the trade market is like to move up and land one of the premier QBs in the draft? Unless Big Blue can land Caleb Williams – or even Jayden Daniels – I don’t see the logic.
Let me explain…
The Giants’ offensive line has been the absolute worst unit in football for the better part of a decade. You could put a prime Tom Brady behind this line, and he would struggle. That’s how bad it is. Instead of trading Jones, use the resources you have to finally secure the spots on your team, that have left fans with a pit in their stomach for a decade now.
Mets Spring Training Surprises
Every spring there are a handful of players who attract some attention and shine in parts of the real season. A few players who have caught my eye are Tylor Megill, Tyrone Taylor, and rookie left-hander Nate Lavender. Megill has had some success at the big league level, but has never looked this crisp and in command. In a season where the Mets need some things to bounce their way, a resurgent Megill would certainly be a good start… Tyrone Taylor, who came over in a trade from Milwaukee, has shown some speed and pop and could make a real impact on the Metro’s in his first season with the club… Nate Lavender, a rookie left-hander, has caught the eye of the mets brass as someone who could be an X factor in the club’s pen. If the bullpen can reach its potential, the Mets could bullpen their way into some wins.
March Madness Preview!
In the words of the great Jon Rothstein, “This is March!” There are so many fascinating storylines going into the most exciting time of the year. My own Red Storm have a chance to go dancing with a win this Saturday against the rival Hoyas.
Allow me to set the stage: a loss in this game would be the Equivalent to what Tom Glavine did in 2007 (which I was in attendance for). But that’s for another time… The resurgent Johnnies have won four in a row and have put themselves – for the time being – on the right side of “the bubble.” They have a chance to improve their seeding heading into Selection Sunday. As it stands now the Red Storm are a part of the “last four in.” That means they would play in Dayton, in a play-in-game. The caveat is the Red Storm swept the Cats this season, so if Villanova can finish the season strong, it would put the St. John’s in a spot. A win against Georgetown and another win against the Hoyas in the Big east tournament could be enough to send the team into March for the first time since 2019.
Other storylines around the country… How many teams will the ACC get? As of today, it looks like they will be Duke, North Carolina and Clemson… Virginia has a chance to get one of the last at-large bids with a strong showing in the conference tourney. Otherwise, the league has underwhelmed this season. The Big East should get 5 teams in – six, depending on who you ask. UConn, Marquette, Creighton, Villanova – and potentially St John’s and Seton Hall. With the pending Big East tournament, who knows what will happen? We do know that the first season of Rick Pitino at the Johnnies’ helm will be in the fate of his team’s hands this Saturday.
That’s it for me, comment below and come back tomorrow for a man they call Aristotle… and Mugsy.
