COOPERSTOWN, NY – Back in the day, the nightlife of New York City was a place where on any given weeknight you could bump into an athlete inside any nightclub or restaurant. Players like the NY Giants’ Lawrence Taylor or the NY Knicks’ Anthony Mason were staples at The China Club, Club Cheetah, or wherever it was happening.
There was a restaurant on 57th and 3rd Ave called Nobu, where one night my friend Sandy Kyrkostas was entertaining about ten people. He called me up and asked of my whereabouts. I was at BB King’s at Times Square watching a boxing match. Sandy begged me to come to his boring event.
I showed up and ate the various stuff he had on the large table when all of a sudden, the Yankees’ ace pitcher, CC Sabathia walked in. Sandy’s eyes lit up. “Hey, don’t you know him?” he asked me. I kept stuffing my face, and as CC passed by the table, I shouted over to him, “Yo!” He responded, “Hey my man, what’s up? Is Ray here, too?” CC was referring to my sidekick Ray Negron, who was home in Babylon, Long Island.
I got up and gave CC a “bro-hug” as the guests at the table were totally mute. I broke the tension when I announced to them to introduce themselves to the Yankees southpaw. Sandy’s guests lined up and took selfies with CC.

It just goes to show what kind of Hall of Fame person Carsten Charles Sabathia Jr. is. He’s as humble as they come, and won a bunch of new fans. Those same fans praised me with the “You da man” title, while Sandy was patting himself on the back for calling me.
With the announcement of CC getting inducted into the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, Sandy is up in heaven beaming down on CC’s shining moment, and those guests are probably thinking of their CC moment.
