PORT JEFF, NY – It’s MLB Trade Deadline Aftermath Day! Let’s break it down.
The Mets made significant additions at the trade deadline. After sweeping the Giants but getting swept by the Padres, they bolstered their bullpen with impactful trades. Former Philly Gregory Soto came over from Baltimore, followed by Tyler Rodgers from the Giants, both of whom have already improved the team. Then, in his second season, David Stearns made a blockbuster move, acquiring one of the top closers in baseball, Ryan Helsley, to set up Edwin Diaz. Helsley, with his 100+ mph fastball and devastating slider, perfectly complements Diaz. On the offensive side, the Mets secured their center fielder, Cedric Mullins from the Orioles. Mullins, a Gold Glove-caliber player, brings stellar defense and adds some pop to the lineup.
The Yankees were active at the deadline, making several smaller moves to bolster their chances in the crowded AL Wild Card race. Ryan McMahon, long linked to the team, has already contributed with both his glove and his bat. Meanwhile, Amed Rosario and Austin Slater, acquired to platoon against lefties, add much-needed depth to the lineup despite limited playing time so far. With injuries and underperformance from players like Williams and Luke Weaver, the Yankees made a crucial move to acquire Pirates closer David Bednar and Camilo Doval from the Giants, strengthening their bullpen for a push toward October.
Star closers Jhoan Duran and Mason Miller were both involved in blockbuster trades. Duran was sent from the Twins to the Phillies in exchange for two top 100 prospects, as the Twins aim to rebuild following a few disappointing seasons and a potential ownership change. Meanwhile, Miller, one of the top closers in baseball, was traded from the Athletics to the Padres in the biggest deal of the deadline. Miller will bolster the Padres’ push to catch the Dodgers in the standings.
Topping off the madness, the Minnesota Twins traded star SS Carlos Correa back to the Houston Astros in an absolute stunner.
