What the Yankees Should Do With Cody Bellinger

Yankees fans would dread this Bellinger press conference.

SPANISH HARLEM – It has not been a good couple weeks for me. The Philadelphia Eagles lost in the first round of the playoffs to a team that fielded practice squad players. The New York Knicks played almost no defense whatsoever. Did I mention the Eagles?  Anyway, losing tends to bring out the worst out in me but at least I have the YankeesI’m being sarcastic.

The latest news from the Yankees free agency offseason has them offering Cody Bellinger 5 Years and 155 million. That’s sound about what he is worth, maybe more but he wants a 7 year deal. I loved having Bellinger last season but anything more than 5 years is lunacy. This is the same Belly that is a couple years removed from being non-tendered by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Yes, he has recovered to have some solid years, but we are talking about a guy that won NL Rookie of Year and an MVP, those years are long gone.

Offering more than 5 years is a gamble that the Yankees should not make. Draw the line at that and if he signs with the New York Mets or any other team, wish him the best. Say what you will about Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones, you have guys that can and will contribute at the Major League level. At some point you have to see what your prospects can do, develop them and see if they prosper. I mean you gave Anthony Volpe 3 years and counting, so why can’t you give these prospects the same leash.

I am not saying that I don’t want Belly back, I would take him back at the price he is given. He can help this team in multiple ways and with Aaron Judge and Gerrit Cole a year older, you want to win now. The team at this moment is still very much flawed but Belly makes them a better team overall, but don’t make the same mistake you made with DJ LeMahieu.

That’s it for now, please come back tomorrow for more great content from Jackson Sternberg.
